Guessing 400d will have better quality photo
but 10d will last alot longer?

We have both cameras here - my partner has the 10D and I have my 400D. The 10D is build solid and is great to handle, it has a nice feel. I like the 400D for it's lighter weight and more modern and easy to use menus.

The images out of both cameras are good, the difference between 6 and 10mp not meaning much when you are looking at an image on screen or as a 6x4 print.

Only thing is the 10D is getting on in age, but a good sample which has been looked after should be ok.

Cheers,

G

...the old long-arm self portrait is even harder when you've got ski gloves on. And then I spotted the reflection of the camera...

If you haven't cropped that, that is some damn skillful composition right there Jono!

Nope - no cropping or anything. The only thing I've done is reduce it to 1024*768. Just lucky I guess ;)

I toook this photo with the intention of cropping down to the guitar and the blurred hands.

massive contrast increase, some grain added, bit of saturation and sharpening in post production.

so...hypothetically speaking, if I took a tumble on my last day of boarding and kinda smashed the LCD on my Canon G7, and assuming that it can't be repaired, any suggestions on cameras that I should think about?

On the list at the moment are the G9 and 450D. I'm still not sure about a full SLR (mainly because of size), but have found some serious limitations with the G7 since I've owned it (mostly in terms of slow lens and poor high ISO performance)

If you need a camera this week go the G9, but it is pretty much the same as the G7, with added raw. Raw lets you dig around in the data and pull useable images out of badly exposed shots though.

Nikon released the Coolpix P6000 last week, which is the Nikon equivalent to the Canon G series. Likely to have similar low light performance to the G9 (no compact digitals have anywhere near the light gathering ability of the SLRs) but with the addition of GPS, for geotagging.

The downside of this Nikon is that the raw format is yet another proprietary Nikon raw format. It can convert in camera, but the PC raw processor will only run on Windows, and won't be available until late October. If you want to use Adobe Lightroom or other digital darkroom software, you could be in for a wait.

*edit* - the P6000 has an ETHERNET jack :0
