One could call it a "ginger pussy", if one was in an enlightening mood.

Question:

Should I buy a used Canon 70-200 f2.8/L (NOT IS) for $600 less than MSRP?

Thats a stupid question, I think you already know the answer

PS you dont need IS unless you are an old man/women with the shakes

I just need to wait for my student loan application to be processed now (car repairs costing half of what expected, why not blow the difference on glass :D)

You won't regret that lens for an instant. National Geographic type nature photos are in the works, I hope. That lens also works very very well with the 1.4x teleconverter (the 2x is a bit slow and soft, I found).

IS is a bit of a have, in a way. In no way is it a substitute for a tripod, and you will find the innate sharpness of the non IS 70-200 compensates a bit. The only people who really need stabilisation in that lens are the paparazzi. If you are taking photos in the forest cover, or sports, then a monopod will let you nail it better than stabilisation anyway.
