Sorry, I can't speak on the specific lens, BF, but at 300mm, you need all the light you can get. F/5.6 as a maximum aperture doesn't leave a lot of margin, although the IS would help somewhat. I use an EF300 2.8L IS, and it still has to be reasonably bright to keep the ISO down and have useable shutter speeds for anything moving.
If I was after a zoom telephoto, I'd probably go back to the 70-200 f/2.8, but get the IS model.
