EoinC wrote:Good to see you enjoying it, Ryda. One non-HDR path is to "Expose to the Right", so that you get the histogram bulk over on the right hand side, whilst keeping highlight clipping down to whatever level is acceptable for the shot that you're taking. This basically means that the sensor is gathering more light data, so there is more wiggle room when you get to processing (you can't bring up detail in the dark areas if there's no light data to work on). Try it and see.

Sorry if I'm missing this one? when you say "Expose to the Right" it is making the "Marker" on the exposer scale (ringed in red) line up on the right hand side ?

Tugboat's on it. The ETTR is exposing to the right as in shifting the data volume towards the right side of the histogram. Once you get over to the Nazi side of the scale, you may get into the highlight (clipping) zone, and you need to decide whether sacrificing a bit of highlight is important to the individual picture.
The picture may appear over-exposed before processing, but the basic deal is that it has captured the maximum amount of data, which gives you wiggle room to make adjustments. This is essentially the opposite of many B&W negative films, where the greatest detail sensitivity came with low exposure (ie under-exposed could be rescued, but over-exposed was more likely to be fubarred).

Try turning on the histogram, Shane, and do some experimental shots, watching how the captured data moves to the right as you increase your exposure (lower shutter speed / smaller aperture [increased f-stop No.] / higher ISO), and moves to the left when you decrease the exposure.

Chur, Tugboat. Less of a Like is setting up at the fart of a sparrow in a nice posie, only to find that one has left the memory cards back at the ranch. Good job that Nature doesn't rush the Dawn Service.

Hahaha... oh I've done that as well. The missus had to jump in the car earlier this year after I'd walked up onto Mt Vic to shoot some mountain biking and I forgot to take cards. Did a long weekend landscape photography trip last year and was 4 hours from home when I realised that I'd forgotten my tripod plate. Had to do some major improvising on that trip with just a gorilla pod!! :D
