Both seem pretty cool, but Mrs Flyboy freely admits to being likely to get frustrated with the steep learning curve; for both of those cameras it was reccomended that a basic photography course would help.

The Lumix G3 is on offer at around the $1600 mark, with a few freebies that make it only about $200 more than the more basic two once you add in the bag, SD card that comes bundled with the G3.

So the G3 is at the moment the more popular option for my better half, on looks, ease of use, high quality accessories.

Is any of this making sense & any opinions?

Really does depend what you want to do with it, the G3 still really is a Point and Shoot camera, you will have better photographic options with a SLR full stop.

For that sort of money you cant go past the Canon 60D, that said first you need to make the decision between point and shoot and SLR.

SLRs are leagues ahead for sports photography, high speed shutters/focus etc.
Point and shoots are smaller and I cant speak about the G3, but they usually suffer from some shutter lag which is painful.
And to top it off, the canons take awesome HD Video.

Cheers for that ThingOne - got some thinking to do clearly

Helen went through this process about 3 years ago, ended up buying a cannon DSLR, hasn't regreted it at all, yes there was a small period of learning how to use the camera and work out some settings, BUT, the camera hasn't held her back which I suspect would have happened had she bought a big point and shoot, and hell, as her sister in law proves, you can still use a DSLR as a fully auto point and shoot if you want too!

Good choice, I reckon the XXXD series is a very solid option for a first time buyer.

Ah thats a 3 shot (-2,0,+2) bracketed shot hdr'd in photomatix then slight adjustments in photoshop, no way could you take that shot without some kind of extreem processing.

Cool, I wondered if it was an HDR shot, I was playing around with that last summer had some nice results.

Still awesome pic though.

Photomatix seems to be the weapon of choice for HDR?
Anything else worth looking at - or just head straight for that?

I've never been happy with photoshops HDR efforts, it seems (to me) that I can get realistic nice blends with photomatix without spending ages on it. I think I prefered the old controls, its all a bit more complex and busy now, more options, but still its the best I've tried.
