I think your confusing it with the fixed focal point, that being 50mm, meaning that the lens does not zoom. It still has an auto focus motor, not sure what the min focusing distance is.

What would anyone recommend for a Nikon? And are the wider f-stop 1.4 lenses worth the extra 250+?

I think theres 2 1.4's now for nikon with a new one out recently.

f1.4's are faster and have better Bokeh, tho best to start with a cheapo 1.8 and move on later wont cost you much if anything.

hey guys, just read up on what you mean by 50mm, sounds awesome. I need a new camera, anything I could get with a $1000 thats a ok camera body and a 50 mm lens- anything you recommend?. thx

Not sure on current pricing but I'm pretty sure you'd pick up a Canon 1000D (perhaps with twin lens kit?) for around a grand now? Or you might even get a 450D with a single kit lens for that money?
The 50mm f1.8 retails for about $200, which is dirt cheap for what it is really.
Primes obviously have their limitations (ie no zoom) but for a couple of hundred bucks they are so much fun. You definitely need another lens (or two, or three....) in the bag though. Really depends on what you can afford to spend.
I bought a Canon 450D about a year ago and absolutely love it - would recommend it to anyone starting out (and have done, and they have bought them, and also love them!).

It depends on whether your camera can autofocus with the older 50 f1.8 which are AFD (D90 or better).
If not then you will be in manual focus only, which might not be the end of the world or you can go with the 35mm f1.8 AFS DX which is cheaper and fantastic, or the more expensive 50 f1.4 AFS, which I have not played with.

If you have to have AF, then I would go with the 35mm 1.8 on cost and its a really good lens
If you don't need AF and are happy to go with manual focus then I would get the 50mm 1.8 AFD. Its heaps cheaper and almost as good as the f1.4 especially once you stop down to f2.8 there is even less difference between the two lenses anyway

Have a play with the two focal length settings on your zoom lens and see which you like the look of more.

If you don't mind buying second hand you can pick up 20D's for F all money now (or even a SH 5D) and they're still a great camera(s), I love mine with the 50mm lens on, just makes you want to play around.

Hmmmm, not sure on that one. I've not used a 1.4 so can't really comment. Gut feel would tell me to go for 1.8 - but your gut feel might be different to mine!
When I was buying the 1.8 I was really looking at bang for your buck - it is super cheap for what it is.
Someone here will have experience with both and be able to offer more of an insight on the 1.4 and whether it's worth it (I think RJD has both?)

I'm going to get a faster prime butnot realy sure quite what yet, all the L's are way out of reach so likely either a canon 50f1.4, the sigma 50 or 85 or the new canon ef-s 35 if it comes out.

I know people with the canon 1.4 and its lot better at a lot of things than the 1.8.
