nzmatto, Yeah that was the first time I took fireworks piccys, ISO200 f/8 and bulb shutter. Usually held open for 2-3-4 seconds otherwise the light-filled smoke just destroyed the pic.

yup, she's hard work making a living out of photography now. I have been published in a few papers, but have never tried it for money. I have got a new camera now, and have been asked to prepare a number of photo's for an exhibition in a local art store. There is no time limit on this, so I am just slowly working on getting better pics.
At the moment I am spending more time cycling than ever before in a serious effort to break through a couple of personal targets so pics are kind of on hold. Mind you, given I am looking for Wellington Harbour shots, the weather has not been doing it's thing at the right time for me either.

Thought I would add my take on night photography.
Shot this when living in Perth, we would get pretty impressive lightning storms there, although with surrounding buildings getting hit, standing by a tripod in the open felt a little uneasy. There was too much ambient light for the usual "leave the shutter open till the lightning flashes" approach so it was a test of reaction speed and some guessing on where the lightning would be in the sky. Not surprisingly my keeper rate was very low!

When i got my camera a few months ago i also puchased a UV filter but i havent fitted it yet as im not sure how does it go on the end of my lense and do i have to remove it everytime im finished with it. Its a Canon 1000d camera, i have two lenses so should i buy two filters one for each lense. ??

There are threads on the inside of the front of the lens, it should screw straight on. Usually you can still put the lens cap on on top of it if you want to leave it on. You don't need 2 filters unless the fronts of the lenses are different diameters (they should be something like 58mm, maybe smaller). I think the main reason for using a UV filter is to protect the front of your lens and after the last DH race, I'm definitely investing in one.

This little bastard was moving so quickly it was hard to get a good shot

yup should buy two saves a lot time and of hassles even if they are both the same size
(lot of time lost havin to take it one just two put on other) i as soon as i get a lens i slap a uv on and it only comes off when it really has to for cleaning or like putting a circ pol on with cokin filter ring (wide angle lens only)

Love that lightning. The great thing with digital is you can take 100 to try and get a good one and it doens't really matter.

Anyone know a good place to get a sensor cleaned in Wellington? (EOS 20D)
