You follow Skyline quite a way north past Johnsons, and Cemetery Trail quite obviously heads down just before you get to the old chimney in the trees.

Bit of a blat round Wainui in some sort of half-arsed preparation for the W6W - up Wainui hill from home in Lower Hutt, a Labyrinth/Towai/491/Jungle Gym lap, then a Snail/Directa/Lower Beeline/Jungle lap, up Labyrinth and out for a spin on the ridgeline 4WD tracks for a while, then another 491/Jungle Gym lap before heading home.

Still riding relatively strongly after 3 1/2 hours, with insufficient food - 6 hours with pit stops available at the van for snacks ought to be OK, I think.

Nun runs

It's flowing much faster with yesterday's tickling.
Only 1 patch of braking bumps left.
You can easily get too excited and do much less braking as I found out

After being bum raped by having to work all of ANZAC Day I took Friday off to compensate. The Heckler needed some trail time as the Cotic had been the steed of choice lately and Blue Lightning was getting jealous. Decided to hit up Mt Lowry/Rata Ridge in the rain and mist. Ran into a couple of hard core God Botherers talking about scriptures and shit, haha Jesus freaks. No matter how many times I do this track it still has something to offer. The ride down the firebreaks into Wainui was suicidal. Still had some more energy so over to Harry Todd (first time, great track would do again) and Mt Crowther. Unfortunately no view from the transmission tower but heaps of fun cooking the brakes on the way down. On Saturday linked up with the local yobbos and went for a sift up Car Parts Extension and then down to Red Rocks. Weather was total shite but we all had grins a mile wide as we hurtled through the mud and puddles. Maximum pain was felt biking back to the wind turbine to pick up the car.

Been spending my wife's money at i-Ride so I had to take my new Specialised Captains and my new Nitelight Destroyer 1200 lumens for a test night ride in Makara Peak ...

In at the top of Allington, up AMP connector, along the tail end of Ridgeline Ext, down Big Toms, SWIGG & Starfish, up Koru, SA, ML, Aratihi to the top ... pause to admire the view of city lights smudged by the fog rolling off the harbour, and the distant flickering of other riders' headlights around the park ... then down NF-JFK-Smokin-BTW-S&S, back up Koru, down Snakecharmer toward St Albans, finish with a climb up Rimu and out onto Allington again.

Fantastic night, the stars were spectacular (again). All the tracks were wet but in excellent condition - no problems with grip, no sucky bogs anywhere. There were a couple of pot-holes on north face switchbacks that grabbed my front wheel but no biggy. Great grip and control from the Captains, a big improvement over the Maxxis Igniters.

The Nitelight was awesome on full power, it has quite a wide beam so you can see all the foliage and stuff to the sides, which is quite different to the "tunnel of light" experience I've had with other lights. On low power they were quite sufficient for going uphill in the bush or anwhere on the road, but I wouldn't want to go far or fast downhill with them on low.

The only downside of mtb nightrides is how cold you get hosing all the mud off the bike and lubing it afterwards.

Sounds like a great ride Wombat. :)

I went up Transient and Karepa up the road to the turbine for my first decent length climb on the singlespeed. Pretty hard without SPDs.... Past the windturbine to the end of Carparts Ext. Looked up the hill and saw lights going down what I can only assume was Long Gully .

Just hung out there for 5mins enjoying the clear night and a 4WD drove past and down the eastern side of the hill directly across from the CPEXT exit with DH bike on the back. ABout 2mins later a farmer came down in his ute and asked me to make sure I wasn't riding Long Gully at night cos it's not permitted and too dangerous and could I please post the fact on vorb. So there you go...

Anyway, onwards down CarParts Ext. and Car Parts (AWESOME FUN!) down the Sawmill and Highbury fling to Squatters, Holloway and home. Beautiful night with some good smatterings of mud.... :D
