Well we rode Peaking Ridge on Saturday arvo (3 of us)
...we shuttled a car up to the dam and then drove round and parked at the locked gate at Tantragee Saddle..total ride time from car to car 3.5 hours.
Anyway the grind up to the top of Fringe hill was fine...weather was overcast and temp was reasonable.
After a food stop and pad adjustment at the top it was into the bush..immediately you can see the difference..its been a year since i last rode P ridge and the first thing you may notice is the forest canopy... most of it is now on the forest floor..the chainsaw work is immediately evident..
The trail along to the junction was quite damp and getting traction (to ride)was nigh on impossible, although I’ve always found this part of the trail more push than ride.
Trail proper.
Well the first thing I can say is if the Queen is giving out gongs for services to MTB..then the trail blazers on Peaking Ridge get my vote...fallen tree after fallen tree is sliced and diced, pretty soon you come across a log ride..we passed on it this time, trail was still a bit damp, and I’d come too far to break me or the bike(and i left my testes in the car)...the top half of the trail it must be said is still pretty rough, but rideable, and it requires all your attention all the time, looking for lines is a waste of time, its pick an obstacle and ride it.
Note to bike and component manufacturers and or MTB reviewers...if you want to test your products for trail abuse...this is the trail...frames,rims,shocks,tyres,brakes etc ,all get a serious flogging on this trail.
For the next hour or so, I had some of the most fun riding ,sure I slid off the trail here and there, I resorted to using the handle bars as a brake at one stage. One part where a fallen log had a large piece cut out for a bike to pass through, turned out to be exactly 5mm to small for my bike ,hence my pedals jammed either side, while my body tried to carry on...oh the joy.
Somewhere over half way the trail starts to get more flowy, lines are easier to choose(they actually existed), the trail is more defined ,and in some cases is recognisable from previous rides, but it still it keeps you on your toes.
All trail skills are required; speed , balance ,nurofen ,feather braking and ESP.
The bottom half allowed us to open up a bit, bunny hops there,a little kicker here ,zooming and winding down through the trees and the pig wallows.
And then bang..we were out.
All in all a bloody great ride.
Cheers to all who cut through all the crap to make a great trail. Well Done!!
Incidently ...none of us broke anything, or flatted of hurt ourselves....woo hoo!!
Went for an after work blat at Whitford, along the main road and up to Breadheads, down Breadheads to the river and back up along Return Track to the 4wd track. Conditions out there are quite good and I’m hoping there won’t be any heavy rain between now and the weekend would be good to do some of the deeper trails in there!
Rode the MP grand loop this evening and it was choice!! Can't believe how dry and fast she's riding and there wasn't a whisper of wind at the top - life's good
Went up and did the Whites bay loop which is riding super fast. Did the pylon track as well but the rollers all have pits at the bottom of them Just avoided a DOC worker though so not sure how much longer it will be open for......
