What about some old Lucasarts point and click adventures?

There are a few that are shortly to be legitimately re-released...

I can vouch for Indy Jones and Fate of Atlantis and The Dig from that list.

ScummVM is worth a look if you are impatient and naughty.

In a terminal, no tiles.

I was thinking about Nethack, and then I found this: http://clivecrous.lighthouseapp.com/projects/11282/home - Nethack in 3D! Downloading now.

However my laptop is a "netbook" with a 1024 x 568 screen, a low powered CPU/ graphics adaptor and running Windows XP. It also has a smaller keyboard and a touchpad so anything which requires good hardware or lightening controls is going to suck.

I was thinking about strategy/ RPG games but I haven't paid any attention to PC gaming in years so have no idea what's out there.

Recommendations anyone?

Hmmm, need more info - gimme an idea about other games that appeal to you.
I personally prefer turn based strategy games, but that's personal preference. One of my favorites, that doesn't require a lot of grunt, is seriously in depth and addictive and will literally waste hours and hours on end if you get into is:

Galactic Civilizations 2 - it's one of the best of the 4X style of games, like good old Civilization, but has a lot more depth and the AI has been evolved over something like 15 years (game was originally on the OS/2 platform and was the most popular strategy for OS/2 if I remember correctly). The AI is hard and very clever at figuring out strategies - you will be suprised if you try predictable stuff on the AI :)

Or for something a bit different, you could try something like a WW2 submarine simulator - Silent Hunter 3 would run on your laptop and could be purchased from a bargain bin and has some nice mods available to bring it up to date.

RPG:
NeverWinter Nights 2 would be too much for your laptop, but the first version could be a goer and there are some cool modules available from the general public (like conversions of older D & D RPGs using the NWN engine).
