Voip Providers: Looking For Any Suggestions

Postby Scotty on Wed 26/Aug/15 8:51pm

Alrighty, going naked broadband. Ignorant AF about VOIP, I know how it works and how to set it up etc, I'm more intersted in the service level of providers in New Zealand.

Are there any good/band ones that stick out?

Our Orcon VoIP seems fine.

I would also like to learn some stuff to set up a second line for my wife's business.

Do I need a separate inter web connection or is this something I can push through my Vodafone cable?

You can push voip through any kind of connection. Hell, you can run it off your cellphone (I use an overseas provider for outbound from computer, cellphone & (when i still had a working one) actual phone at home).

We use Vadacom at work - bit more enterprisey, but I know a few people who roll Orcon VoIP & don't have too many complaints.

Honestly though, with cellphone plans the way they are these days, why would you even bother?

Had Orcon Voip for about 6 years for the missus' business. It's been sweet as, never had a problem with it

They have an app so you can use your mobile as a landline if that's your jam
Never used it but here's the link https://www.orcon.net.nz/geniusgo

Bad coverage at home and wife does most of her work via phone in Australia and East Coast US.

I used 2talk. Impressive functionality.

If anyone wants a linksys voip box(goes between router and phone) let me know, mines in a drawer somewhere. I think I did need help from 2talk customer service to set it up, then faultless)

I got one of these gizmos too (PAP2 or something?) if someone else needs one. I used it up til my cordless phone died.

I've been rolling naked BB for about 5yrs, with voip for outbound and 'fuck it' for inbound. (calling now totally replaced by cellphone, with voip/viber on cellphone for any intl stuff i cant use skype for)

Basically because I wont answer the phone anyway, so I don't want it ringing & pissing me off. If its important, there's plenty of other ways to get hold of me.

Disclaimer: this approach may not work for everyone :)

Having lived through the CHCH earthquakes, I'd never be solely reliant on a cell phone or VOIP.

Wont have the option in a few years when the UFB build is complete and they shut down the copper network.

you seriously think we'll have 100% uptake on fibre in 'a few years'

realistic timeframe for decomissioning copper network - 10+ years, 20 if you're being totally realistic

Whats the best way to get fibre uptake, shut down the old. I doubt the govt will just leave it to people to switch over. Once the build is near complete I bet they will start the process. It might be a different story for those not in UFB areas, but where there is fibre the copper will go.
