I noticed the path he took had been cleared and was well used. Good way to turn a road in to singe track...

They're closing the Sumner-to-Lyttelton hill road permanently, and they're going to widen Dyers pass Road so its accessible to large trucks that can't use the tunnel.

I really hope they add in a separate cycle path on the edge or something, otherwise there are going to be some horrendous accidents.

Each to there own i say, its only a few hundred metres where there is a risk of rockfall if you happen to be there in a quake.I bet the odds are a lot higher of getting killed cycling through town on your way to the hills. Its not like the cyclists are going to endanger anyone else but themselves. I think there is more than one way of looking at it.

While it may have been a good buzz. It was a stupid error of judgement. The road is closed for a reason. Breaking this barrier can result in arrest, a $5000 fine and up to 3 months in prison. This is not a good look for the cycling community. Drivers hate cyclists already due to some peoples actions in the way they ride. This does nothing for cyclists in aiding the cause.

Lets just hope no others will be so stupid.

Looks fun to me. I would encourage cyclists to do what they want and ignore drippy councilors like Wells and all the rest of the shalt not killjoys in this city at the moment. Just don't post the videos to Youtube. ;)

Agreed. looks like a ready-made wootfest. Council have to say what they did to cover their puckered arses, looks like a future mtb park with readymade shuttle road to me...

Who cares really? Your choose to ride it at your own risk. Would be dumb if the authorities to throw resources at trying to stop people going there.

It may be closed as a road but it’s still a public area to ride – like a forest area, or a grass area or a beach area. None of which are public roads but still able to be ridden legally.

What would the council do – cordon off those areas too :ib:

Looks like a place that is still reasonable safe and fun to ride on an MTB to me :)
