Hey guys,

So I’ve had my Kona Kikapu for about 17 years now and for the most part it does everything I need of it, I mainly ride gravel service roads and bush tracks, I do not jump.

Currently there’s a few spokes missing and I need to buy a bike tool kit but I’m wondering if I should just buy a secondhand full suspension mountain bike.

I’ve been looking on trademe and there are quite a few going, perhaps a 2016 model? My budget is up to $1000 and I want a bike that will last just as long as my Kona has, it doesn’t have to be carbon frame. And I like the sound of a 1x gear set, no dramas on gear changing..

Any suggestions? should I try one out or can anyone suggest a good make / model? I’m 5’10 95kg

Try some out to get a feel for new geometry, then look at the second hand versions.

Having just moved on my 12 year old mtb, I concur that things have changed - a lot.

Sure, there is nothing that I can ride on my new bike that I couldn't on the old but there is a whole different feeling in terms of stability which is really confidence inspiring.

Yeah totally agree things have changed a lot, also this time I’d like something a bit more tailored to my needs as I’d like to get more pleasure from the experience.
Is there a bike park that will allow me to test a few models? Woodhill is the closest I assume? I’m in west Auckland.

N+1 = number of bikes owned + 1. This is the correct number of bikes to own.
S-1 = number of bikes which will result in separation from a partner - 1.
This is the limit to N+1.

Not my preferred style of bike, but choose the one with the longest reach and slackest head angle - it'll be the most fun.

Competitor is a hardtail vs the others being full sus - you need to make that call yourself for the kind of riding you're doing.

I'm a fan of Giant's in terms of bang for your buck. I rode an 07 Trance for a long long time, and from memory the 2014 Anthem would be similar in terms of geometry. Not super modern in terms of current geometry, but if you're mainly riding fire roads and a bit of singletrack I would say it would be fine.

While I've not ridden one, I would probably steer away from a 2014 full sus 29er (the Camber). It seems to me that 29er gemoetry (specifically fullys) has only really gotten dialled in over the last couple of years.
