servicing what?

a team of 12 year year 13s go over to a island in the south pacific ie fiji, samoa, rarotonga... and repaint cass rooms, community buildings, build toilet blocks, all that kind of jazz, just helping out people less fortunate than ourselves

Ah, you do know that 'people less fortunate' still have the ability to wield a paintbrush, right?

yes but they generally do not have the money to buy that paintbrush let alone the paint, its called outreach and helping others get out of poverty

I don't mean to be rude (I atually do think it sounds like a good thing you are doing) but would it be much more effective and benifical to give them money to build amenities etc rather than fly over and it do it. Surely much much more could be done with the same resources.
for several reasons:
1) they dont neccesarily have the time and energy to do the things that we will be doing, and if they were to do it themselves the living standard would not chnage which we also want to increase
2) personally we do not get to see what is done with the resources we give them, so we do not get more motivated to do future things like what we are doing, and i personally will get to see a bit more of the effects of what i raise for the famine each year, i will also get more motivation to do this
3) also they will not get impacted emotionally and spiritually as well as in their physical living environment, which is probably just as important if not more important then all the work we will be doing on their land and buildings etc

so yeah there is a few of the reasons

1) You're saying it takes foreigners to intrude to better peoples quality of life? If they did it themselves it would be as good...

2) You'll slap on a new coat of brown. Get them to take a photo and send it, it'll last longer.

3)I'm sure they'd rather have a couple of hundred bucks that the chance to meet you guys :D

And stirring shit makes me go WOOT!

And why go and help those little foreign pricks when there are more than enough people here that are in desperate need for help? :eh:

because a) they are not pricks they are people too
b) in NZ epopel have the dole if they need it and things like council flats

Why as soon as pookie posts does the group jump on him like that? the guy is actually trying to do something good, not just sitting around picking holes in everyone else on the internet.

Youve heard the one about the fish? You know, give him one vs teach him to get one...

But still, good for you.

I just see it as impractical, its like celebrities wearing yellow wristbands to show they care with $2, rather than actually donating their cash to the cause. It seems more to me like trying to justify a holiday than anything else... Why not just say I'm going on holiday - wooT!

Just a point, Llama. The money from Livestrong bands is donated by Nike (the distributor) directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation for use among many world wide cancer charities. Not a cent goes to either Nike or the manufacturer of said wristbands. I can't speak about other charities. :)

As a related aside, the LAF through fundraising and lobbying is directly responsible for something like tripling the amount spent on cancer research in the USA, so Lance has done a measurably good thing using the fame he got through cycling.

And leave Pookie alone, you negative bastards - in his way, and through his own contacts, he is doing his best to help people. Good on him, I reckon. There should be more like him.
