General opinion on these?...

09 Jamis Dragon Comp

vs.

09 Giant XTC1

vs.

09 Trek (4300disc or 4500)

I know heaps of people love the Dragon frames, and I owned a Reynolds 853 frame for quite a while and really liked the ride. It's a little heavier, but the feel is nice. The XTC is a proven performer, a little lighter and stiffer, but also a little harsher.

Maybe might come down to price/value/colour/etc :D

Cool, cheers Mono. Looking to probably buy brand new for peace of mind, is there much price difference between the Dragon and the Giant?

The guy i'm looking into it for handles a ratty old full rigid pretty well so most frame/shock combos will be an improvement re: harshness.

Any reason why one of them would be better for single speed than the other? Probably the Dragon ay, on account of the steel?

One more q. Who else apart from Capital can get GT bikes into Welliz? And would any GT rigs compare with the above?

I'll be going for the steel option IMHO. I ride the dragon pro and really enjoy it. The Trek is a nice bike geometry wise, very flickable bike with steep head angles, great for makara but the ride quality is so fucking harsh it wasn't funny. I haven't had any exprences with the XTC but I know a few people with them and enjoy them.

The old dogma of steel being more comfortable rears its head again. What a load of bollocks.

Oh hush you, I was referring to the fact that steel is stronger.

Seems to be true for the lower end of the $$$$ scale. Just sayin'.

GT don't really have a direct competitor to the XTC1 - a $2199 alloy zaskar jumps to a $4499 crabon hardtail. They do have a Zaskar 29er @ $3499 with SLX level kit on it though, but even then if you were looking 29er as an option the Giant shits all over the GT in terms of value/spec IMO.

How about a Charge Duster? A proper ss (with an EBB) for $1200 (on capital website) Is rigid and not the flashest spec but means no ss conversion faffing required. Would leave a decent amount of $ to upgrade.
