That DX hub sounds wicked for an XC SS (can you get a matching front one?)

you used to be able to, and from memory they now make a set of DX-R hubs

True, I'd take xtr over the crank brothers though.

The new DX-R isn't red though, is it? ;)

The DX-R cranks look sweet. You can get a 34 ring and the BCD is standard 104 so you could use a 32 I assume.

The hubs wouldn't work though. There are non disc and for the rear one the spacing is different from mtb (I think)

Shimano need to make a xtr based ss hubset. The DX-R is based off the xtr design so surely it wouldn't be much work. SS with xtr groupy, mmm.

That's exactly what I was thinking, re:XTR SS gruppo.

The front hub should work, and you could respace the rear with washers to run with a QR. I was thinking of a V-brake Shimano DX XC rig though, with the red hubs and red brakes and levers

Heres my single speed that I've just finished building up. It cost me a total of $10 which was the price of the front wheel. All the rest were either throw aways I saved or spares I had lying around. It should make a great little commuter.
