I treated myself to Red Faction last night on the way home from work - and played it solidly for 6 hours

The plot is pure cheddar - 30 seconds into the first cut scene I said to Heather "Oh look, I've got a brother - he's going to die so I can avenge him". There's even a pretty (yet smart/ brave) blonde love interest with a plumy accent. It's nowhere near as immersive as Fallout/ Oblivion/ GTA4...

...however it's so much fun I don't care...

...the gameplay revolves around shooting people, blowing things up, driving irresponsibly, and smashing into things - and it's great. There's nothing quite as satisfying as driving full tilt into the bottom storey of a 3 storey building in a piece of construction machinery, jumping out, setting charges, and demolishing the whole building.

You can purchase weapon upgrades to suit your gaming style and the sandbox/ open ended missions generally allow you to be as creative as you want to. Note: Smashing through the wall of a jail to rescue a prisoner doesn't work if you drop the wall on them in the process

The sandbox is carefully designed to limit your travel by making Mars consist almost entirely of big impassable rocks and mountains plus the landscape is pretty monotonous so getting from point A to point B often involves a tiki tour through points C, D and E - all of which looks fairly damn similar.

Overall it's a lot of fun to play right now but I don't know if I'll be married to it for 100 hours solid like other games.

Although (as you saw on Saturday) my gaming style needs to change as the difficulty increases. The drive vehicle through wall of building/ jump out and blow everyone up form of attack is failing quite spectacularly now

Bring on Thursday afternoon. I want to play some games and have some beer. I don't want to do any more exams. I think I'm going to get Infamous before I get Red Faction though...

I got this last night - hammered it for 4-5 hours.

What a load of fun. Destruction. More destruction. You can run people over. You can do mad jumps. You can plant explosive stuff so that large inanimate objects land on people.

Joy!

Hmmmm I am keen on blowing shit up and making buildings fall apart. What to do, what do do... It's a good time to be a PS3 owner. Very spoilt for choice of great games. I'll get one or the other, and then maybe swap with someone at a later date for the other.

Both good games, but I would go for Red Faction given a choice. It has that GTA thing where you can just play it randomly doing nothing constructive. You can do that in inFamous too, but not quite as satisfactory.

I think Red Faction will have more longevity.

I spent about 6 hours last night playing Red Faction. Am now up to Eos sector which has light walkers and some sort of super rocket I haven't been able to afford (yet). I also have jetpack which is great fun.

The scale of destruction is increasing, I highly recommend finding radio tags (briefly show as green flashing dots on the minimap) as everytime you find 3 tags you get a M.O.A.B. which is some sort of huge megabomb. You attach a M.O.A.B. to a vehicle and when the vehicle explodes it triggers the bomb. Levels entire multi storey buildings in one go

MOAB = Mother Of All Bombs.

It's a real designation for a US bomb... fuel bomb of some sort. Nasty, nasty shit.

I clocked this earlier in the week and am already back replaying it. It's heaps of fun going in with better developed tactics/ knowledge.

I particularly enjoy levelling multi-storey buildings by blowing out their first floor with vast amounts of charges, mines, hydrogen canisters and the occasional M.O.A.B. - or blowing up smoke stacks/ wind turbines etc. so they fall onto buildings/ fuel tanks/ baddies
