Up Makara in the weekend with the woman, went to the skills area for a nosey (hadn't been there before) and ran into another guy there with his woman. He was riding off the wooden drop things and convinced me to have a go (I've only recently been letting my wheels leave the ground on purpose....so was a little hesitant). He had only been riding for a few months and was so exited so I figured it was rude not to. Hit the first two no sweat and then asked him if he had done the third/biggest one, which he hadn't and wasn't that keen on trying it. After some polite peer pressure/banter I dropped in off the third one, made a bit of a hash of it but no harm done. This is turn (again after some polite banter) convinced him to do the same.

It was so wicked how stoked we both were, and both knew that if the other guy wasn't there we wouldn't have done it, but it wasn't a pissing contest, just genuinely wanting the other guy to succeed.

And then just so put us back on solid ground about 30 seconds latter two guys came screaming in and flew off them at a far greater pace of knots then us. Chuckles ensued.

But hey, I always tell myself there are always people worse than you, and there are always people better than you.

Good shit.

Having fun on a bike is not a competition, unless you can find a decent metric for most fun had.

4 hot laps at Manfield driving an NZV8 made me go w0000000000000000000000t!

The moment when I locked the rear wheels when downshifting from 4th to 3rd at about 160 clicks was certainly interesting

Dropouts that match your wheelsize = w00t.
First go on flowy singletrack with the Banshee 26" drops. Snappier cornering, and just +1 to grin factor.

Less w00t, flats.
Any tips for keeping your feet on the pedals over jumps or fast chatter bumps? This is why I went full time clips all those years ago. I'm sure I'm compensating for bad technique, but I just love the confidence of knowing my feet are staying put.

Yes, and no.

Heels are dropped, and yes - I should probably have got 5.10s, but wanted the full lace cover of the shimano AM7, and the ability to shaft my LSS by ordering a known fit from the intertubes.

Hence the dredge of the resole thread.

I don't find my Saints as grippy as my Wahwahs so apart from buying new pedals and shoes, I got nothing for you

I agree to be honest. Saints are too small and not grippy. AM7 shoes aren't that grippy. There's a reason we all use five ten even if they're crappy hunks of junk that fall apart.

But we used to ride with skate shoes and v8s so it must be possible. to help with jumps I'd practice bunnyhops and to help with chatter/rough stuff I'd just drop heels even more, loosen up, make sure your line choice is okay and just practice.

The saints seem fine for size, my feet are only a 42.
I did jamb my thumbnail into the sole of a 5.10 approach shoe vs the vibram on the shimanos. Big difference, the vibram looks like it's trying to make up for compound with pattern.

Yeah once the pattern is gone on the shimanos they are like standing on ice. 510 made a smooth soled riding shoe which works amazing, and I think they just did it to prove that they could because if you're walking on mud it's a bit like going skiing so for actual mtbing it's quite awful

Pedals should go right to the outside of your shoe, and should be as long as possible lengthways. Saints are short as all hell. It makes a huge difference to grip levels I've found. Are saints still only like 85mm long in the platform? Vaults are 105mm by comparison.
