Seems like a rort, where's this mystical $75??

Can't charge freight when it's included in the purchase price (cos it's free) so that they can get their opening the mail fee.

I'd raise the roof.

Go find a DHL truck and let all the air out of its tyres.

Personally more of the strongly worded letter type.

Sure, you can tuck a strongly worded letter under their window wipers too if you must :eh:

I've never heard of them making up a freight amount when none is listed before however..

They didn't make it up in our case. It was listed & being ex USA was fairly high value. I think shipping was about $80 of the $350. At the time we thought the approx $400 limit was for goods only, not goods + shipping.

Err yeah I figured it was common knowledge shipping cost was included (I remember danose pointing it out several times) however it is DHL picking a number and applying it when none is listed it was is unusual in this instance with sifter...

Wobbs' ammo for rubbing one out is rubbing it in.

Perhaps it depends on who deals with the package locally?

A few years back my stuff always went to customs who collected the fee, then on local delivery.

More recently it has been the shipping company dealing with the gst themselves and obviously taking an (overly large) "Assessment Fee" along the way, I have previously had problems with PBT doing this.

If they can put something over $400 there is a fair bit of money for very little work in it for them. Additionally as it is discressionary not to charge GST on things under $400, rather than legislation, there isn't any recourse for it.

^It's clearly stated on customs that GST is not payable when revenue is < $60. There's recourse with DHL, in my opinion.

A simple phone call and email of transaction will iron it out. They've probably measured item and included their retail value to it.

What's more concerning is how many other people are getting stung who don't know any better. There are a few free freight offers out there...

FTS, the customs website is very clear:

www.whatsmyduty.org.nz/ wrote:If the amount to be paid to Customs is under $60, this will be waived, but if it’s more than $60, you’ll have to pay any duty and GST

They don't go anywhere near a "may" so I would be right down CRCs and DHLs throat on this (with a strongly worded letter and formal complaint).
