As seen on TV1 news tonight.

Was a beautiful morning for a ride. About 50km was on wet roads, but no rain where I was riding, very weird.

Is that a single shot or a bunch stacked?

What settings?

I've messed about with a mates d5mk3 doing some dark sky stuff, and have been wondering if any of the compact (ish) stuff would take an ok dark sky shot so I can carry it tramping or bike packing and it not be 1, stupidly heavy 2, horribly fragile.

its a stitch of 8 shots. Looks oK but would only print a fraction of the size a similar 5d2 shot would

Interesting. How big do you think it would print? A3 or A4?

Might see if I can find someone with one that I can try out. I end up in some cool places with some really nice dark skys from time to time, I just don't want to carry a few kgs of expensive camera gear the whole time. Not sure how many over the bars crashes I'd want to have with a D5 on my back.....

I think you would get an A3 from it, will do some trial prints sometime.

suitably compact tripod so you can run a nice long exposure should do it - I use gorillapods myself

after that comes down to good sensor/nice optics - lots of compacts/mirrorless around now (sony rx100-II springs to mind - 1" sensor and better low light sensitivity than the mk.1 - reasonable f1.8 lens).

Once you get up into interchangable lens stuff not so small/compact any more (had a look at a nex6 with the 18-55 at the weekend - nice but not really somethign I'd want to carry on the bike, ok for tramping - body was a nice size but lens doubles size/weight).

Canon-EF-S-15-85mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens.jpg

Rather liked it... the clouds didn't play thier part so I couldn't get the pic I was after but it was nice to get this type of pic with out having to blend multi pics together
