This has got to be one of the most inovative racecars the world had ever seen. It ran 1 F1 race in 1978, and dominated the field so spectacularly, that the F1 bosses put in a stern request not to run it again!
Essentially it was a F1 car with a massive fan sticking out the back. The fan was connected to the engine via a series of clutches, and when in motion it would suck air under the car through the engine bay and out the back. Nikki Lauder had to change his driving style because it worked best when driven fast, but he also admitted that it was hard to drive because it cornered at very high G forces. Drivers following the fan car hated it because they claimed it spat out debris as well, making it an all mighty stone thrower!
As for the rules on allowing it to do it, the rules stated that the fan had to be used to primarily cool the engine - they just made the fan bigger than necessary and used the extra vacuum as a side effect - way to break the rules in style!!!

Just another team pushing the rules as far as they could.

Spent yesterday at Hampton Downs for the 12 Hour endurance race. Good fun, it incorporated a 1, 2, 3, and 6 hour race too.
The 12 hour was inevitably won by a 997 GT3 (and second place too), but a Seat Leon Supercopa TDi managed 3rd which was kind acoo. Weird hearing a race car rev so low though.

However, by far and away the best achievement in my opinion was in the 6 hour. A few guys showed up with their bog standard 2K Cup MR2 (which they paid $2000 or less for), drove it around for 6 hours without a single mechanical issue on one set of tyres and one set of brake pads. They may not have won, but they certainly finished and in doing so beat a number of teams with considerably higher budgets!

Its the age old statement - to finish first, first you must finish! As for the Seat, its economy is increadible, down to less than 1/3rd the Porsche, so if all things being equal, it would be realistic to say the Porsche's would have to pit for fuel at least 3 times more often!
