don't know if this is the place for it, but i've a question about squealing XT disc brakes....?

My brother just bought a KHS Alite hardtail on trademe from a guy who's going overseas... it's got XT wheels and XT discs (very similar looking to my M775s but without the servo wave?) with 160mm centerlock rotors.

While my XTs (203mm rotors) are practically silent under braking, his squeal like a stuck pig and are starting to drive everyone nuts...

Can you bike mechanics give me any tips for getting his brakes to run more quietly? Apparently, the pads are pretty new, but I've considered boiling them, and baking them, and cleaning the rotors and re-installing them to the hubs etc

yes sintered pads are noisier than organics, but yes organics don't last well in the wet. My first thought would be to remove the pads and try and roughen them up (file, sand paper, rough but clean concrete steps), they could be glazed over, especially if your mate isn't very aggressive (ie he has dragged the brakes glazed)

how much play in the rotors?(if any), I would be tempted to try another set of wheels with those brakes if there is play in the rotors

Ahhh, they may just need the pads de-glazed then some hard angry use, a bit of heat in everything at once can shut things up.

sounds good, thanks. I'll give them a boil... then a bake... then a rough up... clean the rotor with rubbing alcohol, look at any play in the rotors and reset the calipers on the frame and forks... then heat them up with some heavy braking!

Help me please.

measured seatposts that need replacing last night - but unsure if I have the correct measurements.

Bike 1 - GT peace 26, I measured the OD of the post as 26.6 does that sound about right?
Bike 2 - old steel 'masport' branded BMX, I measured the OD as being 22.2 ?

posts were old, well used, and not necessarily still round, so measures could be a littel off . . . .

Can't help with bike 1 soz, but bike 2 sounds right.
