Much better to try find a used 55-250IS canon if you can , should be ~$250 used.

the lens may be a bit slow for sports at F4 especially if you zoom to 300, you will need plenty of sunlight to get the shutter speed up, but for $99 might be worth a go.

I dont have any experience with this lens though, so dont know if its rubbish or not and I suspect for that price it probably is.

Personally I'd give it a miss but for a hundred bucks you could at least try it out and then flick it if you don't like it. I'm assuming that motorcross is on pretty open ground so light shouldn't be a major barrier to that lens' useability at f5.6 (and it'll hit its max aperture of 5.6 a long way before your focal length is at 300mm). The biggest problem for capturing fast moving sports will be it's painfully slow AF mechanism no matter what the aperture is.

I took about 30 photos.
Only 5 came out ok, the lens had allot of trouble focusing so I ended up using the manual focus. Very bad idea... All the photos came out, out of focus.
Here's my picks of the bunch, it's my first time I've ever shot any sport before
Constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Great photo Oli! That goes to show that you can crap on all day about prime lenses vs zoom, different auto focus modes etc but if you can't visualise and execute a shot, you might as well go home. Nice work.

So true Fango - and AWESOME shots Oli!
I particularly like the wind sock one, and also the last one. Excuse my ignorance - but that rock looks very much like something from Easter Island? This is taken around the bays somewhere I assume?

Rookie question time from me:
I'm outputting some photos from lightroom for printing - not really sure on what settings I should be using:
1. jpeg/tiff?
2. "Sharpening for print"? (or not?)
3. No need to crank the dpi if it's only to be printed 5x7?

Any pointers appreciated

Thanks Ben! Yep, the "Easter Island" head is a sculpture in Lyall Bay, and he overlooks the airport.

Was also going to suggest this. I find the EF-S 55-250 IS pretty good for biking stuff.
Sure, it's not the fastest or sharpest - but for the money I reckon it's a pretty solid lens for starting out with.
