Hey Robbie - have you ever thought about putting a little joining track inbetween NF and RL where they are really close (I think that's at the start of the 2nd lot of switchbacks but it might be at the first switchbacks)?

Yup :-)

The plan is to join them with a short linking track for fun and access reasons, so a person could cross from NF to RL at that point. :D

To swap back from RL to NF at the same place is not really practical however.

Should have stayed behind, I discovered the hot line :) Don't ride it as a keyhole, stay high and you'll rip around it.

Re: North Face Sunday Sept 5: A Tale Of 2 Corners !

Postby Robbie on Mon 6/Sep/10 7:27pm

05 Sep 2010.. A tale of two corners :o)

We had an almost sunny day, with a temperature of about 10.

Great track building weather, at least at first. By late afternoon fierce winds (even in the valley, so who knows what it was like at the summit!!) and the threat of rain had us bailing out at 4pm.

Which two corners, dear reader? The second last switchback on North Face (point B on the thoughtfully provided map below) ) which is a left hander, and the up/downhill corner above it (point A) - which crests a ridge before dropping back into a valley.

The map:

NF5092.JPG

The last switchback was rebuilt 2 weeks ago, and for my money is the nicest corner on the trail: so we were aiming to emulate that as best we could higher up.

A nice roller/reversal with drain was built before the bend, the track itself directed to the right into the corner:.

way in 2.jpg

The camber was built up in the first third, and a rock filled berm was made for the second two thirds, tapering away onto the straighter trail below..................

The entry thing looked like this before we started:

way in 1.jpg

And then like this:

half way2a.jpg

And the middle like this:

half way1.jpg

And then:

half way2.jpg

And the way out from this:

way out1.jpg

To now looking like this:

way out2.jpg

And finally the exit before:

exit1.jpg

And after:

exit2.jpg

Between this corner and the up the track, the bench was improved, (point C) and the low bits armoured against getting soggy.

Working back up the hill, the corner cresting the ridge was attacked, and made dramatically wider. An in-slope was built and the exit made a lot more friendly, as there is a very impressive drop over side at that point...

And it looked like this in the beginning:

ridge in1.jpg

And it was transformed into this:

ridge in2.jpg

Further around the ridge now looks like this:

ridge mid.jpg

And the exit just like this:

ridge exit.jpg

And leading into that corner (point D) the track was widened a little, drains made and low points armoured. All good.

Cheers to Bryan, Olivia, Jono, Lewis, Rob, Phil, Colin and Ian for their efforts!

After this we wandered up the hill pondering future improvements, and there are many.

So SUNDAY we will be back, planting a whole lot of awesome RATA, so that one day they may grow and tower over the track.

See you there next weekend !!!

Cheers,

Rob
