24-70 is superb, even without IS, but its heavy and expensive.

24-105f4L is opticaly as nice but a stop slower, bokeh tho isnt as good.

So comes down to that stop of speed/weight. I bought a 17-55 instead.

Wow, those bokeh shots are really nice. Leaninig toward the 24-70.
Weight isnt much of an issue, its more about image quality and speed.
It would be going on a 450D so cropping body, and possibly a 7D in the future.

go the 24-70 i find weight not a problem (its light compared to my 3002.8)

and its very useful for a lot types of shot samples below

No longer being able to safely take pics whilst riding along (at 25kph it's easy and 35 it's not safe), I decided to take a $20 gamble on a flexible tripod that looked like it would fit my handlebars, so here's my new setup. Popped it on tonight, off up Paekak hill tomorrow morning, so will give it a maiden run then.

Im after a Super zoon lens, anyone got any real world experience with any of the following

1. 70-300 Canon IS USM F4-5.6
2. 18-250 Tamron F3.5-6.3
3. 28-300 Tamron F3.5-6.3 XR DI VC
4. 18-250 Sigma F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM

Its to be mated to a Canon 7D, I have read many reviews but all swing both ways, im swaying towards getting the Canon lens, just because its Canon, but the Sigma and Tamron are slightly faster and have more range.

I've used the Canon a bit, and have found it quite good. I can't draw any comparisons to the other models though...
The image stabilisation when zoomed is reasonable. The weight of it isn't too bad. It has a lock on it which is good when you are carrying it around.
I'll upload a few pics taken with it and a 20D and link them real soon.

Canon is f5.6 the others f6.3, and I'm sure the others are f4 or slower by 70mm.

The canon will kick the others arses seriously for IQ at 70-300.

Is the reason you're not looking at the 70-200 lenses weight?
Considered a 70-200 F4 L IS?

For Canon stuff i find the reviews here pretty good.

++ I'd take the 70-200f4L over any of those, the 70-300 is good (IQ) but isnt proper full time USM, and isnt weathersealed.

I looked at the 70-200 Canon F4 L, and doesnt have IS (at least not at my price point) and I dont carry a tripod around, plus was hoping to get more range than 200.

A last minute change of heart saw me opt not to bring the camera this morning. Gutted because from the top of Paekak I had a great view 300km north to Ruapehu this morning. The mount was OK, but I think that it would vibrate loose pretty quickly, and there is no means of suppressing the vibration. I am going to get a rubber pad to mount it on, and work out how to best tie off the mount to prevent it from coming loose. Needs more time and thoughts.

I realised I didn't have any shots using over 200mm of the zoom on the Canon 70-300 but to get an idea of image quality have a look here. The 7d is full frame, right? So the magnification would be different to that of the 20D.

Also, the Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is out in April. Maybe you could save your pennies for that :satan:
