Does Mickeyfinn mean to say that If I cycle on a busy road I deserve to be cut up, have cars stop directly in front of me after they pass me and have abuse hurled at me?
All this has happened to me and all whilst on my way to what I would class as quieter roads.
I choose to cycle, I pay my taxes like everyone else and I have the freedom to go where I choose when I choose.

I hope that the incident on Dyers pass doesn't deter any cyclists from going out there.

And I'm another bloody pom :sneaky:

Here the bloody place is empty but you lot insist on finding the busiest road you can and cycle along them.

The same problem exists in Auckland on Tamaki drive. You got idiots there driving down to Tamaki drive with their bikes on the racks ( nearly always about 15k worth of carbon) then cycle up and down Tamaki drive.

I've seen whole groups of cyclist ( in their cars drive to a location and do the same....) You see them drive by in there cycling kit with the bikes on the back .... crazy

I see idiots cycling along Tamaki drive on Saturdays on there tri bars ???? derrrrrrrr

You might not realise this but a few kms south there 100s of kms of mostly empty roads in the most beautiful area I have ever seen. the only problem is now where for a cuppa!

By the way I don't condone assault on cyclist the perp should suffer the ful force of the law

What you don't realise is that most cyclists LIKE riding up and down hills, or riding in beautiful places as opposed to suburban hell. The road up Dyers is a road (one of only 3) leading up to the summit road on the Port Hills - a quiet and beautiful road to cycle on. It's the closest and easiest to ride up to the top of the hills - so naturally gets used a lot. I've been riding up and down this road for 20 years and am amazed that the CCC hasn't widened the road just a little bit to allow for cyclists.

Tamaki is a road that is frequented as much by drivers in their posh cars as cyclists, for the EXACT same reason - ie the views of the ocean and to "cruise". If I was living in Auckland I sure as heck wouldn't want to risk my life riding through the "burbs" where there are no cycle lanes etc. Tamaki drive has cycle lanes, but they're overloaded with cars that are parked, so riders naturally have to ride in the car lane - frustrating drivers. Make parking illegal on this road and "bam", no cycling issues anymore.

Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and respect the other. My job involves driving a lot. If a cyclist slows me down and delays my journey by 30s I sure as heck aren't going to throttle them over it.

it is getting really bad out there and as normal the many are paying for the actions of a couple. I just saw it on the news and think that we all have to have a close look at this story or more to the point the clips, it is a narrow road yet they was a group three wide and then one taking a wide turn and riding straight through the intersection. I couple of things we all need to remember is that we have a part of the road to use not all of it, we do not own the road, if you think you have the right then put in in your will, we will put in on your grave stone, common sense and self preservation is what is in order, leave the ignorance in the office, over the christmas break I was on the road on the west coast, I saw a lot of bikes that got home with luck I was two bikes covered in bag taking up a lot of road on a bad bit of road, think!!!!! two cars coming together at 100kph, that could be a head on at 200kph, a real killer that would wreck both car and kill all inside or some bikes that are the reason for the possible accident, a damaged fender and most survive but the bike rider that are all over the road, what would you really do when you are driving with your family in the car, save the family and another family in the other car or the bikes and rider that think their own the road and have a good chat.
we are all road users and we need to get along before we get a really bad name, we are older so we should be wiser, how would you teach your kids how to ride a bike in a safe manner and stick far left, why do we not stick to the same rules, we are required to use the same roads and we are bound by the same rules but many of us do not, just because we think we are in the right will not stop the hurt when we get hit, what is the example we are giving to our school kids, the rules are their to be broken, they do not apply to us, because we are small and on a bike we can weave though the traffic, I do not think so, be smart, ride smart, stick left, stay single file when in traffic, live long, and remember you will not find anywhere within the law the words, if I fell like it, or your name, stick to the part of the road that is safest, far left, it many be a bit bumpy but we have a better chance of getting home each night safe. also rememeber, if we have good name and work within the rules we can get more help from everyone one to emprove the sides of the road and bike lanes, STAY OUT OF HARMS WAY AND BE SAFE, BE SMART,AND ENJOY THE RIDE

Probably because its the only consistently flat piece of road with a decent surface in the Auckland region which doesn't have traffic lights every 200m.

Also, I have my morning training rides there as I ride everywhere (don't own a car) it would take me an hour to get to anything decent to ride on and an hour to get back, so its simply easier to ride the 5mins from work to get there.

Thats me anyway. Weekends however I'm usually elsewhere.
