Gosh, that's pretty impressive for "30 years off so I can't start racing" :D - I wish I could be disappointed with that level of performance. :)

Is that good? its only a 32kmh average......I did the lake in 5:20....next year I'm planning on doing it in under 12 hours....for 2 :butbut:

The route tonight was flat, just a few slight rollers. If it had been a hilly circuit you could add an hour. at 105kg hills are not my friend...but long runs on the flat running 52/17 with head down bum up I can hit quite a good steady pace.

Same goal for me I think. 2 laps in 12 hours. should be doable.

never did get my ride in today, I just wasn't feeling up to it tonight, so have enjoyed having a day off & cleaned the bike instead. Back commuting tomorrow,, so will probably be complaining about the northerly on the way home. :-)

Gonna watch the weather forecast before making up my mind, but I'd say you've picked a bloody good day for heading south! I would think to be the wind breaker for you would require following you so as to allay the pressure on your brakes from the insane tailwinds.
I'll decide tonight. If it is not wet then I may put in the hard yards and head about 50km north towards you to meet up, then enjoy the tailwind home. :)

If you can hold a 31-32kmh average over that sort of distance, riding solo, I think you can easily break 5 hours for Taupo - it's always easier in a bunch, and race day adrenilin is good for 10-20 minutes off your time. Trying to remember back to the ancient days when I raced . . . in 1987 I did Taupo in 4:40 (back then that was good enough to be 61st), I could hold a 35kmh average for a 70km ride, but I think I was happy to average anything over 30 on rides longer than 100km. So if you're out of condition and carrying an injury/ disfunctionality and nearly 50, I think YOU ROCK!! :D

why thanks   but I can read I'm not disfunctional :p My goal though is to work to endurance riding rather than outright speed. I want to one day go have a crack at the ride in France...can't remember what its called but its the 2000km (???) I think from memory

Was a mint morning for riding but messed around at home and by the time I went out the gale force winds had come up. Made for a mini Tour of Southland and felt like I had been riding for six days at the end. Have to rate the sunshine no matter what the wind is doing!

The weather outperformed the forecast today, so I set off north expecting to make it only about 35km prior to meeting Cooper770 coming the other way, however it turned out to be really pleasant out there. Headed via Waikanae where the clouds made the ride seem ominous:
clouds 001.JPG

continued on up the road about 15 minutes where my Father was out waiting for the paper, so stopped for a quick natter, then it was out onto SH1 where I caught up to another guy who was heading from Wellington to Fielding. He's out training for an 1100km race road and off road around the top of the South Island, so was on a Santa Cruz with Tri-bars. Since we were heading the same way we rode together till I saw Cooper770 coming the other way.
A quick U-Turn and catch up with him and off we were heading south. A brief comfort stop in Otaki and a couple of punctures (not for me :) ) and soon enough I was back home having clocked up a respectable and enjoyable 87km. It's my longest ride since Taupo and marks the start of my build up to Taranaki.

Happy days out there. Traffic was pretty well behaved, and I am so pleased to have been able to get out. Riding with others is always more pleasurable too. :)
