A couple of plain old, non photoshopped point and shoots I took lately:
smallcity1.jpg
Taken from Harbour View Rd, Te Atatu
smallcity2.jpg
Taken from Harbour View Rd, Te Atatu
smallcity3.jpg
Taken from Harbour View Rd, Te Atatu. This is my favourite of the three.
somerandomhouse.jpg
Taken at top of Potter Rd, Dairy Flat. I was trying to take a photo of the cool fog, but it ended up looking like a real estate ad for that person's house.

I can see that the limiting factor for the next wee while will be my skills and the glass I put on it. On my previous cameras, the biggest problem was wether or not to use flash! A whole new can of worms once you get a DSLR and switch it to manual!!
I would go along with what others have mentioned here, in that the best option would be a 450d body, the IS kit lens if it comes with the camera ( often cheaper to get just the body only) and a fast prime lens. Depending on what you plan to shoot most is how you should determine what length and what speed prime to go for, keeping in mind that the 450d has a cropping sensor, so a 50mm prime (as others said before) is equivalent to about 80mm, roughly.
As for video, I have only seen samples of the new HD video coming out on Canons, the quality is very good but im some what of a purist, and believe a camera is a camera and video is video

Hope my 2c didnt confuse you even more.

Thanks mundi - much appreciated (and not confusing at all). That's my philosphy with video vs still cameras as well, sure they can both do the other, but a single camera to do everything (well) isn't quite a reality yet.

In a very weird coincidence my office mate purchased a 450D with twin IS lens kit on Friday (unbeknownst to me), so I am going to grab that and have a play in the near future

dienamics - love the processing on those!

Video - the canons shoot some excelent video, DOF control and low light abilities and picture quality you need a lot of $$$ to get from a video camera. But you need to spend out on mounting/focusing etc to make it worthwhile. I'll shoot some video with the 7D when I get it but I doubt it'll come out too good, as a cheap semi/pro tool there excelent.

Agreed. The 5D Mk II (my current primary body) shoots great video, but, don't expect to be able to grab it and go. It's more cinema camera than video camera with manual zoom and focus pull the order of the day.

The 7D looks like a great body for general shooting so may give myself one of those as my XMas present this year :-) Gave myself a 5D Mk II last year....

That said, don't feel you can't do great sports stuff with the 5D Mk II.
Vincent Laforet does a surfing movie here:
