Personally I prefer the black and white one, sorta makes him look 'mysterious' like a black rider of LoTR. The colour one is all colourful, with a colour-less splodge in the middle.

The black and white one of the other shot is cooler in B/W. The colour makes it easier to see the yellowy light coming from behind him - gives him a dark 'cape'. Not as effective in B/w

IMO the colour one has a much higher definition (for want of a better word). Not only in the sunlight, but the green tinge in the grass adds a lot more detail. And the cape that lubie mentioned is almost invisible in the B&W.

Each to their own though - it's your photo afterall! Cool to see both versions

How do people get on flying with a whole bunch of camera gear? I think my camera bag is borderline too big to be allowed as carry-on luggage but I don't really want to be leaving it in the hands of the luggage handlers

Check your travel insurance too. Mine excludes checking on such things (had a very nervous 48hrs last year waiting for my gadget filled bag to be found).

A lot of camera bags are made to fit within the cabin bag size limits. I know the Lowepro site has a little logo against each bag to show that they "comply", Crumpler does as well I think. I normally fly with my Lowepro Fastpack 250 and have never had any issues. It fits an overhead locker perfectly... I just hope it never gets weighed!!

Tripod is the only thing I pack in my checked baggage if I take one.

Camera classes as a personal item too...

In addition to your allowance, you may also carry on board personal items such as an overcoat, handbag, walking stick, camera or slimline laptop. As a safety precaution, all cabin baggage must be able to fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you.

Cool, I'll have to check the measurements of mine but I'm thinking I'll just take the camera + lenses on in my back pack and check the camera bag with the less important things and pack all my socks etc around it

i have a lowepro compu trekker which is carry on just but way over weight
but if asked i just explain that how much its worth form them to replace if it gets damaged or goes missing and then
they seem quite happy to let it be carryed on
