Here is my effort the project started out with the objective to make a road/cyclocross singlespeed bike out of a cheapy mountain bike. The bike started its new life as a 1989 Gaint Sedona(nothing like Gaint's current Sedona)

first was to strip the all the parts off placing the likely to use in 1 box and discard in another this took about an afternoon. Was then going to strip and paint it myself but did a little reserch and it was way cheaper and a lot less effort to have it sandblasted, zinc-ed and powder coated (recomend elite in sydenham chch $80 at the time and they have done heaps of bike there were 3 in the week i got mine done)


Afterpowdercoating it was time to start re-assembling the bike with new stem and handlebars, though i did have some compatibility problems with going from a 22.2mm inside fork to oversize handlebars but with some help fromm the internet and some luck on trademe and help from bicycle business at homebase chch got all the parts i needed to complete that stage of the build.

had a small break in the re-build as i had to wait for parts from the uk as it looked like i could get the brake levers i wanted here, but that gave me time to find the rest of the parts i needed for it and again some help from bicycle buiness and around again bikes in chch got alll the parts i needed. and 10 days later after ordering my bike parts turned up from the UK and i thought that was great service from wiggle.co.uk did look in to getting these from the US but with exchange rate and courier fees in was almost double the UK price most of that was courier changes though woul have got them in 2-3days

Anyway getting a little of track here back to the build once i had all the parts it was full steam ahead had some problems with the freehub with the splines as pre 1995 the splines were even and now there is one bigger than the rest so couldn't use a spacer kit for the rear sprockets and ended up cannibilising two old cassettes for the spacers With a couple of weekends work the bike was done an here is the result.

I am pretty happy with it in the end and feel i got the result i wanted. Apart fron the frame i reused the wheels, headset, bottom braket and cranks everything else was either secondhand or brand new. The bike has gone from 15kg down to 10kg would be lighter if it was a better quality cro-moly frame like a reynolds or even aluminium be you get what you pay for and the bike only cost $100 on trade me. It runs a 44T chainring and 18T rear and i put some slicks on it and use it for road riding to build up the cardio. The bike averages around 30kmph but gets a bit spinnie at 35 with a candence of 115. And for all the number guys out the there the gear cm on that is 161.3cm and distance travelled is 506.84cm per rotation.

Anyway hope you found this worth the read and if your in two minds weather you want to singlespeed the trails maybe give the road a try first especially if you live in chch or somewhere just a flat its definitely worth it and i enjoyed the whole process from conspent through the re-build to the end result and i now have a unique one of a kind bike and after all its that what singlespeeds are about.
