I nearly got one instead of my SR500 but decided I liked the classic look & feel(and a kick starter) more and I'd always wanted an SR

When we fitted a FZR1000exup motor into an FZR400 frame
RS125 - 43 hp at the rear wheels ( modifying 2 strokes was a hobby of mine )
RMX250 that could take care of CR500's / KTM 560 2 strokes ( another moded project of mine )
RG500 that went off the 260km/hr clock - verified down South Eyre Rd at a speed event, 164mi/hr / 264km/hr .
GPZ1000RX motor in a GPZ750 frame - 285km/hr speed wobbles coming back from Queenstown's Remarkeables Rally

Introduced to motorbikes as a spotty faced youth by my Dad. Got my licence on a borrowed Honda 50, then learnt to ride / stay alive on my first bike - a 12 year old Ariel/BSA 650. Was way fast back in those days.

Had about a 15 year affair with lots of bikes – mainly Honda’s. Dirt and Road. Tried and hated 2 strokes.

Club racing mainly in the dirt. Was most keen on observed trials. Even entered our local rounds on the National series but not really a national level rider. Ended up with a TL125 based bike with modded frame (engine higher for getting over shit and further back for easier lifting the front end. Engine bored and custom crank (longer stroke, lighter flywheels). Still not competitive with the 2 strokes but lots of fun trying.

Lots of touring around NZ. Lots of gravel roads included.

Settled down with a woman who wasn’t a biker, but also had sports cars by that time. Kept my last two bikes (the TL and a 71 CB450) as a threat to the wife. If the toy cars go I’ll ride bikes again.

Mortgage. Kid. Toy cars went. TL has gone but still have the 450 and acquired a 72 CB750 along the way. Have dragged them from house to house for over 20 years. When time and $ allowed motorcycling again I was hooked on mtb. Spent well into 5 figures last year.

But lately I’ve been musing about motorcycles again. Buying the odd magazine. Looking on the web. Tempted to get the 450 going again as a period café racer. Decent frame (the poms do some for classic racing) or my frame braced (have photos of what others have done). Freshened up 450 twin making the noise.

Who knows what summer will bring. I may pick up something that goes to test the water befroe committing to reinventing the 450.

Yamaha SR250 many moons ago.

Long summer's day in the mainland + macpac on the front of the pack rack as a backrest + nowhere to be for months + feet up on the front indicators = bliss.

The only memento I have of those days is that I only ever got my bike learners, so my driver licence will forever be blue with LEARNER on it.

It's great to see and read about other vorbers motorbikes.

I'm due to sit my restricted in a month and am a bit nervous - I'm really just afraid I'll do something stupid and avoidable and fail - like forgetting to indicate or something. But it's great to have the motivation of the cagiva.

Sounds like most of you have been riding for a wee while but if you have any tips for passing tests - bring em on

If you've ridden through out most of your 6 months of learners licence, you'll have no trouble at all ckickmeister enjoy your raptor

I dunno about wellington, but i think all the test really wants to see is use of indicators, dont speed, know the basic road rules, and don't fall off. its pretty basic as far as i know, but that said you live in a different place and have different instructors.

So Im no help to you at all.

Just try and stay cool, maybe go and practice for a while before the test so its all fresh in your mind that day.

Dwayne only sat his restricted recently, and when he did (before buying the dirtbike) he had not ridden a motorbike on the road for over 15 years after failing his last restricted test when he was a teenager.
He failed because he is deaf in one ear and when he sat the test, he was young and didnt know the city roads very well. Took two wrong turns and the instructor yelled at him then turned around and went back to the office failing him LOL
He was so pissed off he wasnt gonna bother doing it again LOL

He is glad he did though, he sat in Kilbirnie and had the indian guy. This time round he went for an hour ride beforehand on a borrowed bike to get a feel for it and he passed easily.
They give you an earpiece so they can talk to you from the car they follow you in and they look for the basics. Indicating, the way you change lanes, that you are conscious of the hazards around you, follow directions, dont speed, obey road rules... nothing hard at all.
One thing they did pull Dwayne up on, was he was warned that he didnt put his feet down when he stopped at intersections/give way signs enough. Side effect from cycling he just balances but he got a smack on the hand and told that it's dangerous because of things like wind LOL

Chickie, you will be sweet, it's not a hard test and if Dwayne can pass it without riding a bike in over a decade, I think someone riding a bike regularly will do fine as long as you dont break any laws LOL

A TZ750 held the NZ m/c land speed record at 180 miles an hour, set in the 1970's by Paul Mclaughlin - stood for many years.

Won a New Zealand 125 Grand Prix at Ruapuna, won 2 x club championships

Have raced 8 times as Phillip Island in the last 8 years. Raced at Mallory Park in the UK in 2002

Hardly ever ridden on the street, mostly race and instruct at local track day events.
