Also a good reason to use heavy steel chain rings. More so if you are heavy or powerfull with a tall gear

It was a Surly Stainless I wrote off

Depending on the grade, Stainless is soft as shit but reasonably tough and wear resistant.

The Surly rings are really easy to bend, Ive had this happen to me as well.

Hang on a minute. To all the Surly benders, why are they bending? Are we talking about JRA with a perfect chainline and tight chainring bolts, or are talking about damage that a bashring would have prevented.

I have 2 on various bikes, 1 in particular did 6 months on my Jeffson before going onto my 29er, narry a problem so far, and Im fatter than Nick_k fo sho

I'm talking about if you lose a chainring bolt or two. They are more likely to bend then an alloy one in this situation.

OIC.
So, if I just look at my bikes, instead of riding them, they shouldnt really be bending then, right?

As long as you don't look at them the wrong way you'll be sweet.

Talking about them though thats a different story....

why would we use lube (presumably copper cote or similar?) instead of loctite?

(Ive always used loctite by the way: the "soft" one... purple not blue))

Should I Buy This???

Postby yak71 on Tue 7/Oct/08 9:36am

Should I buy this or some new wheels for my XXIX? If I bought it, I'd turn it, or my XXIX, into a commuter/ monstercross. It's reasonably cheap, but also wonder if the Kona unit 29, might be a better option. (I bought a unit the other week, but let my mate have it as he needed a SS.)
I'm really struggling to decide between fancy wheels or a whole new bike. .

This is what I found in the spare parts bin at home today. It's ghettotastic!

(I've conceded I'm a freak - who wakes up in the morning, thinks "oh man, a skid bike to get to the dairy would be good to have..." then has one built up out of spare parts a couple of hours later?)

:pmob: You strip it and prep it - my time is free. I have black and white as your colour choice ATM, or for $30 the colour of your choice (including metalics) - and this includes clearcoating over any graphics you want to apply :)

(btw - I have rancheros on the XTC)

I had rancheros in the bin.

$30 you say? hmmm, sounds fantastic, maybe I could be really cool and go with colour co-ordinated forks as well....

:pmob: Most the work is in the prep, painting is a POP. I have all the gear that makes it teh uber easy. $30 should cover the 200ml of paint to dao a frame (I think - its been a while) - and all the rest is just sitting taking up shelf space in the truck :D

We can talk some time if you do want to give that ugly beast a fresh look ;)
