Hi, after looking at this thread -start to finish- I was wanting to upgrade my point and shoot to a DSLR. I am really into artistic shots and have about a thousand to spend.

I have narrowed my camera choices down to the following camera's

Nikon D70 - D80 at a stretch
Canon 20D - 30D at a stretch
Sony A100

have any of you had any experience with these (I think Vert you have a 10D and getting awesome results)

If it were your dollars, which camera would you choose and why.

I would personally not purchase the sony as they haven't been around that long and there is a limited range of accessories (lens, remotes) for them compared to canon and nikon.
I havent really looked at nikon dslr's but do have an old nikon slr, so cant really comment on nikons.
I have a 10d, awesome quality, well built and loads of lenses available, note ef-s lenses dont fit on large cameras like 10/20/30d.
What will you mostly use the camera for?

Just re-read your post, artistic shots just making sure you dont want to go riding with your camera as 20d's are very large and heavy.
For a thousand dollars, I would look to purchase a 20d body and then a nice lens, rather than buy a 30d and a crap lens.

Mostly artistic, but with the option of some high speed action shots. I want to take this camera tramping and the alloy case of the Canon appeals.

I am a Canon user... see above for photos.
Currently have a 20D, will buy a 5D MkII when it releases I think.

Most of my money is in lenses so hard for me to move.

If I were entering the market right now I quite ike the look of the current Nikon bodies.. the D300/D700/D3 are all pretty sweet and we should see the D3x soon at more like 24mp (using the same sensor as the A900 I think).

For me it comes down to a choice between Canon and Nikon.

Pros for Nikon.
1. They don't cripple their pro-sumer bodies e.g. compare D700 to 5D Mk II
2. Current range of bodies is nice

Pros for Canon
1. They still shit all over Nikon for Image Quality
2. They are more popular and thus there is a better range of 2nd hand lenses for them on Tardme et al
3. Easier to rent/beg/borrow lenses for them
4. Better cameras at your price point. The xxD range is great, 40D is going to be a really sharp price due to recent 50D release.

A few of my other key tips. Avoid the kit lenses... they are rubbish.

For Canon buy lenses in something like the following order
24-105 F4 L IS This is the best of the walk around lenses IMHO. Another option would be the 28-70 2.8L but it's spendy and losing the IS isn't worth it IMHO.
50 F1.8 Mk II (Cheap and nasty but everyone should have one) or Sigma 50 F1.4 (I got one of these yesterday :-) )
Then either Wide or Zoom
Wide: EF-S 10-22 (if you *know* you'll not want a Full frame body) or 16-35 F2.8 L.
Tele: Either the Canon or Sigma 70-200s you ned to decide between weight and speed i.e. between the F4 IS or the F 2.8 or F2.8 IS. I have the F2.8 as a happy balance as at tele lengths I generally want speed and can do without the expense of the IS.

For my money I'd be looking for something like
1. A EOS 30D body only ideally 2nd hand looking for someone upgrading to a 5D MkII soon.
2. a 24-105 F4 L IS, you'll prob need to buy this new as unlikely people will be 'upgrading' from this lens.

I took this approach (20D cherap 2nd hand) + new 24-105 from BHPhoto.com... very pleased.

Other key niceties are that it uses the same 77mm filter size as most other Canon L lenses. The Sigma 50mm I note above does the same... so only have to buy one $$$$$$$ B+W Polarizing filter :-)

Finally though bugger it and bought a 5d with the 'kit' 24-105 f4. I would have liked the 24-70 2.8 but it was just too expensive. The 5d MK II is going to be out of my price range and really I cannot see any great benefit for me at the moment.

The feel of the 5d is just outstanding compared to the 400d.

I now need a better tripod to hold the thing still !

Awesome frog Willey, what do you mean by 'artistic' photos ? I do a lot of "impressionistic" style photography and the people I shoot with all use the D80 - I am very envious of the multi-exposure mode.
