I have a small amount of money coming my way that will cover the purchase cost nicely, have a nice set of 28/50/85mm primes, but I am simply not set up to deal with 30MB RAW files, both in terms of computing power and secure storage.

Which 85 prime? The 1.2?

I'm in the market for a new 50mm prime at the moment and currently thinking about the new Sigma 1.4.... I can't quite bring myself to buy the L primes...

Have a 24-105 L and 70-200 2.8 L... but I get zooming for my $2k that way!

Naw, just the f1.8s + the Canon 50/1.4. I had the use of a 5D in the UK and they still worked pretty good. In practice, the L buys you better construction as the depth of field wider than 1.8 is ridiculously narrow.

The other issue with the 5DmkII is that it will out resolve pretty much every lens you mount. The L zooms are top of their game, but you will always have a nagging doubt that there will be better, sharper pictures if you just purchased a more expensive lens.

Speaking of which:

Did anybody notice that Zeiss are now making their top of the range primes in Canon EF mount? Manual focus only, but with full metering compatibility.

Yea.. the Zeiss lenses look nice..

I want to get myself a Minolta 58mm 1.4 Rokkor and modify it for EF.

how do you find the 14mm Sigma? what f stop is it and how wide?

This Sigma is an F2.8 and it's WIDE.
14mm is the widest full frame rectilinear (non fisheye) lens you can get.

It's a BIG piece of glass and by no means light. Pretty sharp corner to corner when stopped down a bit.

2nd hand and a chunk cheaper than the Canon L equivalent.

Love the pics of the blossoming trees, spring is here....it is bonus time for me so I thought I would get a new camera, alas the roof needs replacing so no new toy.....but...here's a couple of shots from the old one. check out the view from our local park, and you'll notice a small white dot in the top pic.....it is the boat from the bottom pic, just zoomed right out.
This is from a fuji finepix S5500 which I have taken over 6000 photo's on now, and still going great. - 10x optical and 3x digital zoom.
