how do I lock my rear wheel in? Do I need a bolt through hub? or make up some chain tugs?

Bolt up hub for sure, chain tugs not a bad idea either

Either or. A bolt up hub - don't confuse it with a q/r hub using a bolt up skewer, they just don't have enough grunt.

My dropouts are identical to yours, I use a Surly SS hub (bolt through) and a Surly chaintug on the driveside. Its mint

coming up to rotorua for the whaka 100. will be on the niner 29er single speed.

anyone suggest gearing for the ride.

Notice I said ride not race!!! Slow overweight middle aged guy who wants to survive the event not die inthe first two hours!

XTR cranks are like that. Most SSer's cut/grind off the big ring bits though.
