Young skiers and snowboarders are gearing up for the first freestyle competition of the season at The Remarkables Ski Area this weekend (Saturday 18 July).

The first round of the K2 Parklife Mini Shred competition, which takes place in the Tararua Real Iced Coffee (TRIC) Beginner Park at The Remarkables, is open to freestylers of all abilities aged 16 years and under. The second and final round also takes place at The Remarkables on 20 September.

Ross Lawrence, Ski Area Manager, said the event always provides a good day out for competitors and spectators.

“The TRIC Beginner Park provides an awesome environment where the kids can push their boundaries a little, get inspired by others and have a great day,” he said. “Meanwhile, our spectators, many of them parents, get to enjoy some exciting grommet freestyle action in a chilled out atmosphere.”

Mr Lawrence said he was really proud of the event which had grown to be one of the most popular competitions on the youth freestyling calendar.

“The kids love it because it gives them the chance to compete in a mellow and supportive environment,” he added. “Plus, The Remarkables is home to some of the best terrain parks in the country so it’s the ideal place to learn and improve your freestyling skills.”

There are three categories in the competition - Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12 - for both male and female skiers and snowboarders with a range of prizes from K2, Sessions, Smith Optics, Nikita Clothing and The Remarkables up for grabs.

Registration is free and there is a $20 refundable bib deposit. Competitors only need to turn up on the day and register at Guest Services in the base building between 9:00am and10:00am to secure their slot in the competition. Helmets are compulsory.

Making The Remarkables as affordable as possible for families, children aged 10 and under receive free day passes every day of the season and return transport is free from the Station Building with a valid day or multiday Remarkables pass.
