I need a small NAS box which I can set user permissions on. So some people get full access and others only get read access of certain parts.

Will a basic NAS box with SMB client do this or do I need more? Any recommendations on what to buy?

synology - since they have reasonably comprehensive permissions control - have a read from page 73 on :

unless you only have a very small number of users you'll want to setup groups and do the access control via group membership rather than on a per-user basis

I have a Qnap, it does this.

I think you would struggle to find a nas that does not allow you to do this. I am partial to my synology but my even old dlink allowed per user permissions

I have a Dlink 320 (I think?) setup with two 3TB disks, mirrored.

And that has super easy permissions to manage etc. Nice and easy.
