You're armed meerly with a pork shortsword. If you had a pork claymore like me you'd get plenty more (and you wouldn't need the manky hair either!).

Played up in the movie to make it more appealing toward female viewers.

Tolkien was somewhat of a misogynist

These movies are flat beer. Admittedly it's a stout, but still... no head on it :(

I get kind of bored with all the action hero stuff, and the manly machoness, and the totally limited roles all the women were in.

Nah, more like Speights - more flavoursome than others but after sampling something better you won't want to go back to it.

Would say though that one area where movies (especially action movies) have fallen short on compared to TV is in the roles of women. Roles of women in action movies generally seem to confined to the damsel in distress, comic relief or villainess. Even when in the role of the hero, there's often a level of objectification (*coughtombraidercough*).
One notable recent exception would be Kate Beckinsale's () role as a warrior vampire in Underworld. Good example of a female hero that is in no way less than her male counterparts "’cause she's a girl".

TV seems to be a different story, with Alias, Battlestar, Babylon 5 and Buffy being good examples of strong female leads. Alias and Buffy had their supergirls, while B5 and Battlestar have women in roles of senior command. B5 had a female XO and a female leader of an alien race, while Battlestar has a nice teacher lady for a President and a number of young woman in combat and command roles. Shame though that only with the separation from our reality that sci-fi and fantasy provides does the notion of girls pulling triggers and barking orders become safe.

More heroines in skintight leather is all good by me. Especially with young Kate in them.
