The Wellington Conservancy is being replaced by a new Wellington and Hawke’s Bay Conservancy from 1 July 2009. This is the result of an organisational review of the East Coast/Hawkes Bay Conservancy which has been disestablished.
The new conservancy will include all of the existing Wellington Conservancy and all of Hawkes Bay, up to and including Mahia Peninsula. Within its boundaries are the eastern Ruahine, Rimutaka, Tararua and Aorangi Forest Parks, and some outstanding conservation sites, including Rangatira Island on the Chathams, Lake Wairarapa, Pukaha/Mount Bruce, Boundary Stream, Kapiti Island, Castlepoint, Cape Kidnappers, and three marine reserves.
It comprises five area offices - Hawke’s Bay, Poneke, Chathams, Kapiti and Wairarapa.
Wellington and Hawke’s Bay Conservator Alan McKenzie says the new conservancy provides an opportunity “to reassess the way we work and improve our effectiveness by increasing the delivery of conservation on the ground”.
“It effectively doubles our geographic size and our recreation and biodiversity work and adds 200,000 more people into our community of interest.”
