Camping...

Postby ThingOne on Tue 7/Jul/09 9:11am

Our regular camping ground in the BOP looks like its gonna be sold :(

So, we are on the hunt for a new camping ground for our family summer holidays. Key requriements are...

Family friendly,
Walk to beach without crossing roads. (warm water beach)
Swimming pool
Powered tent sites.
Not close to a main road.
Awesome Cycling/MTB places

Anyone got any recommendations?

There is a nice one in Rotorua - Nongotaha side - but I don't think it meets all your requirements. No pool or beach, but stream and lake instead. I stayed with Ma and Pa last summer - very pleasant. Can find out more if you're interested.

If you want to go south, one of my favourite places is Pohara just out of Takaka - there's riding, especially if you find a local to show you. Close to Nelson for Tour de Vineyards ;) When I was last there there were tent cities - I think you would approve :p

Edit - no waves at that beach - but huge tide and you can just float in the shallows at high tide and it's like a warm bath

Yeah the Top 10 there looks pretty good. I havent stayed there, but have been there for work a couple of times, its right in between the beach and Papamoa Beach Rd, at the end of Domain Rd.

As for cycling, its just a short 3km trip up Domain rd to get onto Welcome Bay Rd, so some hills and less traffic, etc. And of course this takes you straight onto Reid Road, and the Summerhill Mtb trails are just 3km up there.

Sand at Ohope gets way to hot for small feet. Or used to back in the day when I had a dinosaur as a pet and small feet.

Must be a different mineral make up to the beaches up at Papamoa and the Mt 'coz they don't seem to heat up quite so hot.

Yup, Pohara is great but we started going to Motueka Top 10 which is bloody brilliant. 10 mins in the car to beaches/rivers and fantastic MTB within 1/2hr either way. Rameka, around Kaiteri, Flara saddle, Ngatimoti (even has a pump track !) The camp ground is only 5 mins walk from town but you wouldn't know it. Great for the kids and safe.
