Being the MX distance jump champ I'd imagine he'd feel pretty unsafe in a pair of Vans ;)

Well, judging by the "40-footer" at Vic. park;
there's 80 feet of take-off, 150 feet of actual air, then 20 feet of ramp before the "real" landing, then add 50 feet if you have sik triplez=
300 feet! :p

I can't see that much of a need to wear moto boots you'd have to be doing something pretty wrong for it to be an issue. And having normal shoes give you more control on the pedals too, something quite important to me when hitting 130 foot jumps

Hi-top five-tens should have enough support?

Rennie doesn't hold the MX record anymore:

I think this is the newest one:

Trigger Sets The World Record!
Monday, May 16, 2005

CRUSTY DEMON, CALIFORNIAN TRIGGER GUMM, JUMPS THE WORLD’S LONGEST OUTRIGHT DISTANCE ON A MOTORBIKE SETTING A NEW WORLD RECORD WITH HIS 277.5 FOOT FEAT

SIX NEW WORLD RECORDS SET AT THE GREATEST EXTREME EVENT EVER STAGED

Jumping a massive 277.5 foot (84.4m), California’s Trigger Gumm set a new world record tonight (Saturday May 14 ) for the longest outright distance jumped on a motorbike, clocking the world mark at the Crusty Demons Night of World Records at Ipswich’s Queensland Raceway (Australia).

Trigger’s jump capped off a night of world records in the greatest extreme event ever staged. Capitalising on the perfectly still conditions that extended from the late afternoon into the night, six new world marks were set including Trigger’s outright record for the longest distance ever jumped on a bike; a 250cc distance world record for the grand daddy of the Crusty Demons, Larry Linkogle; and four records taken by Australians Robbie Maddison (Kiama) – longest trick and longest distance on a 125cc bike; Jamie Barkla (Toowoomba) longest distance on a quad; and Clint Debner (Penrith) longest distance on a pro mini bike.

But it was Trigger Gumm - the 37 year old operating engineer from California’s Orange County – that really set the 25,000 fans into a frenzy. Riding a Honda CR500, he left the kicker (ramp) at more than 85mph (140kph), flew as high as 80 foot and landed 277.5 foot (84.4m)on the 10,000 tonne mound of dirt.

It was the longest distance ever jumped on a motorbike, and will put Trigger Gumm in the Guinness World Book of Records. The previous official record was 253’ set by Jason Rennie from the UK in July 2000.
