Lets try something a little more economical.
Toyota Corolla retails for say $30k.
Equivalent to 15,000 litres of petrol.
Which at 7.4 litres per 100 km means I could travel 202,702. Which we all know if well within the realms of possibility of a Corolla!...

the corolla is the exception that proves the rule :D , I would like to know the average km's on the clock when deregistered though.

The reason I ask is that while Woodhill, Riverhead, Hunua, Whitford are all great places to ride, Auckland has got some great local spots if you want to do some exploring. Ive lived in Titirangi, Oratia, Piha, Freemans Bay, Birkenhead, Paremoremo and Albany and have always managed to find some little gems close by perfect for a 1-2 hour post work ride. In Birkenhead there was eskdale bush and Freemans bay had Western park and urban riding. Out West by Parrs park there's some clay trails in behind the cemetry (not sure if they're still there) and if you're closer to the waitaks then even better!

I still sometimes drive to ride, but with time pressures I find myself MTB riding locally more and more. Sure the spots above might not ever make it to the Kennetts book of classic rides, but there's nothing like digging and riding your local trails.

I know the Cemetry trails and have ridden them for years, used to go up there on BMXs. But only takes 10-15 min to ride them all. Would like to see something up in the Waitaks though.

Hey Spokes, so you're close to the Cemetry trails then. I could be so wrong, but it looks like there's still a lot of unused land up there all the way through to Glen Eden. With a bit of exploring and spadework you might have some good urban tracks....

I thought there had been a thread on the Waitaks a few weeks ago...I'm not holding my breath for any legal riding there that is worth doing. Why people can't accept that properly designed tracks won't adversely affect the environment is beyond me. Or maybe they just don't think adults are allowed to have fun.

An extra $2 for petrol isn't going to make any difference to me. Whether you think it's worth going there or not is up to you.

it only really worth thinking about if you are driving long distance for rides..ie north shore to hunua etc. Woodhill is so close hardly makes a difference in cost. On a different tack..used to do day trips to ohakune from Auckland..$52 return in 99, now id be lucky to do it for $130 with same car.

yeah, Ive lived in Henderson, Glen Eden, and now titirangi. When I was in henderson I lived 100m from the cemetary and used to ride there a lot, there are a few little trails but as you say nothing big.

The section between the railway and the cemetary has some good potential, but I've only ridden there once, as I was almost mugged by a whole bunch of wannabe gangstas down by the train lines on a bit of dirt road. Thankfully my mad bunnyhopping skillz let me get over the railway and escape onto west coast rd. You're right spoke, that is a dodgy area. I work in Glen Eden now and it can be rough at times.

I've ridden a few of the 'roads' and trails in the waitaks close to titirangi, where I live now, but the ever present thought of a $250 fine and bike being taken off me, is enough to make me make the effort and drive the 30mins up to woodhill.

In answer to the original question, yes, I will keep riding, it is worth it, although its something Ive been thinking more about (planning fuel usage etc.).

i have recently given up on driving as i rediscoverd how much fun it is to ride in my local bush, instead of 3 hours to cover say 15 ks (get ready drive to woody, ride, drive home clean up) i now do it in a hour, by riding 5 mins down the road to Eskdale bush in Birkenhead.

driving to woody is worth while if you want to hammer out big ks, but my idea of real mountain biking is, mud, roots, ruts, gravel and anything else the trail thows up, woody is the same no matter what trails you ride there.

the new mountain bike park in albany is a waste of time in my eyes, you still have to drive there and its just another fucking woodhill.

we need to be building trails in town look on northshore citys web site at the GIS maps and you can see alll the bits of bush owned by the council, im currently trying to figure out a way of making a series of loops by just riding random bits of bush linked by small bits of road and its very easy to do, but for me personally im happy playing in eskdale and if youre not a novice on a bike ill show you through eskdale and how to link up loops, i can ride in there for 3 hours and only have to ride small sections of tracks 2 or 3 times, and its alot more exciting then a fucking sand pit, even now with all that rain im still running dry weather tyres and loving it to bits
