How is Carparts Extn and Barking Emu riding at the moment? Id rather not contribute to a mudbath if I can help it. Me and a group will possibly be heading up tomorrow.... but we can always ride Red Rocks instead...

I'd imagine they would be fine tomorrow. Not much rain recently and they would have firmed up after the weekend.
Meant to be showers tomorrow... at some point.

Pretty good all things considered - abit sloppy in places, mainly towards TT. The new stuff on the track makes for a fairly mind-boggling surface - it rides like a superhighway!

All on for lunch time today. 3 starters so far. Progress has been stellar and the rough track will be usable in the next month or so. It wont be opened until it gets WCC blessing.

Going for a dig from about 12. Onto the section of track the BNZ team built, just needs some edge work and armouring.

We have made excellent progress and are reworking parts of the track before its offically opened (pre Xmas). Its mostly usable but avoid it if you can during wet conditions. The link track from upper Windmill to Carparts is being re-routed to avoid the steep climb. WCC wants that finished before the track opens. There is a Corp Voly day later in the month that should give a great boost to the work required. Enjoy.

There is a corporate volunteer day on Wed 21 November. Anyone is welcome to join in but it would be good if you let us know so we can ensure we have enough tools. Meeting place at the Windmill carpark @ 9am. Focus is on upgrading the top part of Windmill and Carparts tracks. Come for all or part of the day.

Just a reminder about the Corp Voly day next week (Wed) if anyone is interested.

Windmill is now open and the link track is finished. This means that all MTB downhill traffic should use Carparks (not Windmill). WCC want one way traffic to apply to MTBs - up Windmill and down Carparts. Foot traffic (up and down) stays on Windmill only.

Could you give a description of where these tracks start and finish? Seeing as you built 'em there should be no arguments... I have met numerous people coming up what I thought was carparts and always was a downhill only track, but maybe never was?!? Are there giant signs spelling it out?
BTW haven't seen it but love ya work!

The exit from carparts is fairly clearly marked as no entry at the bottom. Windmill is on the left at the start - the green marked bike crossing in the road.

And might I say what a mighty nice track windmill is. :love: love your work. :thumbsup:
May the windmill builders be blessed with sunny days, an absence of punctures, and a great many bike shop discounts! :D

To my understanding, carparts was built as an uphill track. It was definitely much more fun to climb than the alternatives. The downhill only sign is relatively new,and is understandable given the high potential for collisions and the opening of Windmill.

The track intersections at the top are well thought out, though some signage might be useful one day to add to the one that says windmill is uphill only.

Eew shucks...

Thats for the postive comments crew. Several things:

1. Signage. WCC will put it permanent signage, ie bollards with track names, direction of travel etc. I have put up temp signs (it was a rush to finish it for the PNP race last weekend) but one has already been removed. I'll put up more temp signage at the top and bottom of the tracks. Just to confuse things, the top part of Windmill is 2 way MTB - its from the around the back of the knob that its only one way up - the new link track is to get downhill riders across to Carparts easily.

2. Direction travel of Carparts. It was built about 10 yrs ago and we (a lunchtime riding group) did it as a 2 way track - it was a great ride up. We were still in mourning over the loss of the Reservoir tracks..... A few years later, the Happy Valley lads started the downhill grooming process. Time has moved on - we (Brooklyn Trail Builders) wanted a Grade 3 track from Aro to Tippy, the windmill road got busier, more people out on bikes due, in part, to CPX and BE further south. We also nicked some of the lower Carparts track to use for Windmill and when we built the replacement bit of Carparts we wanted it to be designed for downhill use (we were getting sick of building Grade 3 tracks so this made a nice change). The tracks have continued to get busier and busier so separating MTB up from down made lots of sense. We are also upgrading Carparts to make it more fun and encourage downhill MTB to stay away from riding down Windmill. This is still a work in progress to upgrade Carparts - hence the Corp Work party on Wed

3. Track descriptions.

windmill = http://tracks.org.nz/track/show/922
carparts = http://tracks.org.nz/track/show/24
Both need to be re-GPSed with the changes but its a good indication of start and finish

Enjoy.
