Also, I think you might be confusing what is often light-hearted internet banter for hatred.

I was thinking about this in the shower earlier tonite, I believe there are 4 reasons;
1) (percieved) interweb anonymity
2) Sad antisocial types with character flaws who previously either hung out in small like minded (and small minded) groups, and shunned or were shunned by, society at large, are now exposed to ideas/people/groups they find abhorrent and react in a manner appropriate for their underdeveloped social skills, ie by going psycho (ie on vorb there are queer people and homophobic people, liberals and ultra conservatives, DHers and roadies all sharing a common space)
3) the intreweb gives petty pissing contests global reach
4) arguing is fun!

I think EDC has identified a major part of the problem - what is light-hearted banter to one person is vitriolic character assassination to another.
