There's been much debate over the the actions of Japanese whalers whilst Scandinavians seem to fly under the radar. If any of you have seen the movie the Cove... well here's the Scandinavian (Faroe Islands I think) equivalent of that barbaric slaughter -

Pretty much reinforces in my mind why we need groups like Sea Shepherd. Whilst they may be extremist at least they are actually trying to stop shit like this from happening.

They'd no doubt argue that it is a traditional practice that's been going on for centuries... but does that make it right? Haven't we progressed as a civilized society beyond acting like barbaric savages? Obviously not. It's a bit sad really.

Yeah, barbaric things that people in NZ used to do (like hunting the natives, whaling, eating people, voting for United Future, etc) have all fallen by the wayside. You could argue that a lot of those things were traditional practices in some respect... And yet we have been able to stop doing those things. If we can stop doing something because it's horrible then other cultures should be able to do similar.

In the places where they still go whaling I wonder if they still do surgery on butchers tables without anaesthetic, or if they still try alleged thieves by dipping their hands in boiling lead...?

"traditional practice"? yeah, centuries ago they used motorboats to herd the whales in, eh. fucking thugs. none of them look particularly hungry either, so its not like they actually NEED the protein source in their diets...

i think people consider whales and fishes differently because fish have extremely small brains and are 'apparently' pretty dumb, whereas whales have enormous brains that appear very similar in structure and complexity to the human brain, thereby making it different. whales are our kin, man. whereas fish dont know what's going on and their feelings arent hurt that we're so mean to them. its a whole mammals vs piscine thing...
