Oli's fix is spot on. Parties like Nats, Libs in OZ, Republicans in US look after their corporate sponsors, they squeeze the life out of small and family businesses in the name of "efficiencies of the competitive system" ... they don't admit that corporate "competition" is actually a system of cartels and monopolies.

Maybe we could get an al-Qaeda party into power and revert to an Arab 16th century economic model?

It's more than just that, there are a lot of practices that big businesses use to destroy smaller organisations. For example there is a practice of "loss leaders" - if you're really big, you can afford to sell some stuff at a loss because you have enough sales volume on other lines to cover your losses. Smaller oppposition who rely on profit from selling everything just to get by, can't compete and go out of business trying to compete.

Then there is timing of payables and receivables: a big firm can demand better terms than they give e.g. they demand 90 days to pay their suppliers, but they only give 30 days (or 7 days) for their customers. And if it suits them, they just don't pay when their bills are due, knowing small suppiers need their business and can't make too much fuss, but any overdue debtors are likely to be hit with legal action immediately. It is well documented how some organisations (e.g. Dell and Warehouse) have built a large part of their profitability around this sort of financing strategy.
