Cruiser is right - the NZRU was granted a trademark on that fern design in 1991. I doubt they would chase you, but professionally it would be much better to avoid using it. And with that expensive world cup coming up next year, maybe suing you would help them cover some costs...

Added a 3rd which is still same font but tweaked the R to not be as cut-up and look more like an R rather than a P and n fornicating. Got rid of the fern as yeah it was copyrighted (duh) so made the southern cross from the flag. Also added very faint tread marks on 'shred', couldn't find bike tread.

Decided to stick with the bad font, made another change to the R which I think makes it a tonne better.

That reminds me og the Gravity Canterbury logo.
Fern is betterer as a represenatation of NZ, anyone from outside Australasia will think that the southern cross is an Aussie flag. Hell, half the people in Australasia don't even know the difference!

A man of your skillz should have no problems taking a photo of an mtb tread pattern to use on a logo?

Blue and white looks a bit 'merican... reminds me a bit of those logos you get on American team replica baseball shirts and caps and stuff to show its official merchandise...

Maybe go with green and white and black as more new zealandy colours...

That R looks heaps better, possibly rework the Z as well so it isn't just a reversed S? The colour combo doesn't really feel mountain bikey to me. As an idea what about fade in/fade out the blocky font style into a tyre tread?

make the cutout in the R the same shape as the cutout in the E and it will look a bit more balanced, its that little square hole in the R that makes it look a bit odd...

Could try turning it into a lower-case "r"? (since the e is also lower case)?
