Which insurance company?

Postby Tama on Tue 29/Apr/03 6:47pm

I'm thinking about changing insurance companies (from State) - any opinions out there? Ideally I'd like a policy that would actually replace my Blizzard, rather than giving me a laughable pile of sharpnel.

Any good experiences / bad experiences would be cool.

my dads head of insurance at westpac, so i will ask him what cover u can get on bikes when he gets back.

i think the cover is pretty good as my dads 2, $10,000+ road bikes are insured for complete replacement.

My bikes are covered on the house and contents policy, they have to be well documented(which reminds me to update them!!) and photographed and specified as something that leaves the house, which I guess increases the risk of them being nicked, but the excess is still only $250!!
Not bad for two bikes worth(replacement value anyway)$8500+ and $3000ish!! :D

I found that both AMI and National were quite good. Definitely it'll cost a wee bit more, but a full replacement (new for old) policy is what you're after...

Well I've had DAMN good experiences with AMI. My two bikes are under my contents insurance for my flat, under a national cover. They are covered for replacement, AND crash damage :) I totalled my wheel on my XC MTB last year, and they were going to pay for me to get a new one (and my excess is only $100) which made it quite worth while. Must admit in the end I didn't need it cause I got a D521 and hub for $120 2nd hand, but heck if they were going to replace a wheel it seems a pretty good deal!

Just make sure you list all your parts, so if you break something then they know exactly what it costs to replace that part

I asked my dear Daddy - His opinion is that "State are useless, no matter what - State suck" - 'Fair Go' seems to agree with him...

He uses AMI insurance for house stuff, dunno who best to insure bikes with though..... :eh:

Tell us what you decide upon though - I should insure my bike too... :eh: :paranoid:

(Research into the best place to insure your bike would be a kickarse article for Vorb Web/Spoke, I reckon... :eh: )

It's sounding like AMI or AMP - I called AMI last night and wasn't to impressed - they kept on talking about market value with my bike.

The truth of the matter is that whilst my blizzard was purchased December 1998 almost every single component has been replaced during that time - some are 4 years old, some are 4 weeks old - so market value doesn't work for me - because in all honesty I'd only get $1500-2000 for the bike as it stands.

Will continue shopping around until I can find a "replace as new" policy - sounds like AMP would be a good port of call.

Perhaps you need a friendly(but not too friendly :hmmm: watch out for those botty grabs!!) bike shop employee who can quote a replacement value for a bike of equivalent quality, which is what mine are quoted as!!
In reality the Stab aint woth $8500!! But if you were to buy the latest incarnation of the Stab(Primo of course :satan: )it would set you back $9000-10000!! :eh: :0

So say I get a new Avanti Barracuda with all the goodies, It costs like 2k but then I put a new Ctaeye computer on it worth 180 dollaros.
Could I just go into AMP and say I want to insure my bicycle for 1800 dollars and the copmputer for 180. Then crack out the receipts and then say okay and they tell me how much its gunna cost and I walk out.

At the moment we are with Dawson insurance brokers in Whakas and they were very hazey when I asked what my bike would b worth. Taking into account the fact that I just got a flasher rim and a nice computer.

And its now been 12 weeks since my Dads logger was put on its side and its still not back. The assesor didn't pull finger till like the 6th week and they told us it would take just under 4 weeks so I'm a bit unsure of them.
