HIghlights - first real year of cycling, at 41 years of age! Joined a club!

1. going up the rimatuka incline with my 9 and 7 yr old sons, plus sister and friend
2. getting my third son off his training wheels
3.first 75k ride, closely followed by first 100k ride that one was almost a low light, 85km into a howling northerly, but I had to do it so I could do...
4. first 200k ride a couple of weeks later.
5. Hospi ride, first big event, plus cycling there and back for about 160kms that day
6. first event type race - the Kapiti Cycle Challenge, which also involved falling down a bank for the first time, still finished 5th home out of the KCC riders to everyones (including my) surprise :)
7. first 320 km (200 miles - double century!) and overnight (sorta) ride with Sifter, Thingone, and Monolith
8. second 320 km a few weeks later in the Enduro (1st and 2nd lap of Taupo!)
9. first group rides and club races - handicap, TTT's, graded races, all good fun, even got some points!
10. hitting the 60 pound weightloss marker

Lowlights

1. sitting on the toilet all night instead of going on the graperide magnum

goals for 2010.

1. more riding with the kids
2. get daughter off her training wheels
3. get stronger up hills
4. maybe some race wheels
5. not sit on the toilet instead of the graperide magnum
6. laps 3 and 4 of Taupo?

HIGHLIGHTS -

- started my degree in coaching/ sport management extramurally.
- bought a fully and had good times on heaps of single-track exploring around NZ with my boy.
- lost 8kg from all the riding.
- rode the Karapoti with my boy and he blitzed me on the last hill - highlight is him being awesome, not me being useless:)
- coaching a rugby team of skinny white boys to total domination and the kids giving me an amazing scrap/ memories book (almost bought a tear to my eye)
- wife got her massage training done, and I'm the guinea pig:)

LOWLIGHTS -
- the reality of getting beaten by a 9 year old in a bike race.
- ruptured bicep in august, being on ACC, and only got back on bike last week.
- I found the 8kg I lost...
- the fridge was my best friend.

2010
- studying degree fulltime...Yaay!
- Find some motivated kids to coach.
- Buy a DH bike and grow some hucking balls.
- develop passive income.
- singletrack riding, skills and commuting
- never do another backflip on gymnastics rings again.

Great thread - some really inspiring stuff!

For me:

Highlights

1. Great tour at the beginning of the year from my back door in Greymouth to Arrowtown
2. Squeezing in another mini-tour across Arthur's and Porter's Passes and up to Hanmer (where we got stopped by snow, so couldn't complete the loop back through Lewis!)
3. Getting a team of Green MPs sufficiently organised and trained to do the Taupo relay
4. The 350.org rides
5. Being centrally involved in steering Nga Haerenga (NZ Cycle Trail network) and experiencing the huge surge of enthusiasm from right around the country, including the conversion of many local authorities from being bike sceptics to bike fans
6. Andy Schleck in TdF
7. Great performances by kiwi cyclists at worlds and in the big stage races

Lowlights

1. Finding out the hard way that a tandem was not for my partner and me (Cannondale tandem for sale by the way . . . )
2. Bike time badly compromised by work, illness and injury
3. Especially not enough time on the mountain bike
4. Everyone still calling it John Key's cycleway (sigh)

Goals for 2010

1. Train well enough to complete Brunner and Taupo with satisfactory times
2. Some cycling-related way of celebrating my 50th (goal was always to bike tour the route of the TdF, but Parliament has put paid to that)
3. Build on progress of my cross-Party initiative to promote cycling and improve cycling road safety in Parliament.

And, unbelievably, nearly forgot:

Expected highlight of 2010 = Return of mountain bikes to the Heaphy Track!

It's been a long campaign, but we're nearly there.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Finding that the limits of this poor old broken body of mine are far beyond what I expected (management is the key!)

- Getting back on a DH bike

LOWLIGHTS
- Battling injury after injury after injury (sometimes management can only do so much  )

- Struggling to find the motivation to ride any kind of bike a number of times during the year

GOALS
- Find the balance :)
