What Viscosity Motorbike Fork Oil?

Postby cep32 on Wed 8th Feb 3:51pm

Hi All, Am keen to use motorbike fork oil instead of the rather expensive Fox stuff. Spectro Gold is available locally so I was wondering what weight people have used in the past? It only seems to come in 7.5wt or less which is a bit light for my fat backside (107kg, 6'8" tall). Has anyone tried the mineral oil version instead?

Alternatively, does anyone know the viscosity of the Fox Green 10wt so I can compare to the other brands?

Cheers,
Chris

I've just had a better look at the cost of the synthetic oils and it's about $30-40 for 1litre anyway so an extra $5 for the fox stuff isn't too bad really. When I think it will last me for 5 services then $10 a service isn't bad.

Kind of reminds me of the days I was playing with Simons forks and Fox air shocks on my motocross bikes. Blending fork oils to obtain specific viscosities does work, but owing to the composition of different brands I strongly suggest sticking to the one brand. One experiment ended up with lumps in the oil ..... not good and another turned to a slime like substance as the anti-foam chemicals reacted ....... worse than not good

Fox 10W Green is 47 Cst@40° & 11.7Cst@100°

The important thing to remember here is that the "weight" labelled on the the oil bottle does not mean it has the same viscosity as an oil of the same labelled "weight" by another manufacturer.
There are tables available comparing the actual viscosities of oils in Centistoke (Cst), usually at a standardized temp of 40 degrees.
The "old" Fox 7wt is rebranded Torco RSF "Medium" with a viscosity of 31.82 Cst at 40 degrees Celsius.

Maxima 15W Fork Oil is 46 Cst@40° and Silkolene Pro RSF 10W is 47 Cst@40°

When I asked the guy who builds my motorbike shocks about this stuff that "centistroke" measurement was quoted as being the most correct.

Ohlins FTW!

If you run motorcycle oil, just verify it doesn't contain seal swelling agents first.
